"LEONIDAS VALDEZ!! Get your butt downstairs right now."

Leo jerked awake, smacking his forehead into the model dragon that hung over his bed. By the time he felt the pain, he had already wiggled out of the blankets and was trotting down the stairs. Esperanza Valdez rarely used that tone of voice, but when she did, you knew trouble was brewing.

"Leo!" He stumbled down the remaining steps and darted into the living room.

"Mamá, whatever it was, I didn't do it!"

Esperanza was standing in the middle of the small space, staring at the old TV. Both hands were pressed to her mouth, light from the screen glinting off the tears in her eyes.

"Leo, why did you do this? Your father and I have worked very hard for you, we thought it would be enough..."

Leo wrapped his arms around his mother's waist, saying, "Mamá, what are you talking about? Was it the detention from Mr. D? I thought I told you about that..."

Sobs racked Esperanza's body as she turned to hug her son. She held him close, running her fingers through his curly hair. Leo was shaking, trying to hold up his mother's weight.

"I need you to tell me what happened! Why are you crying, Mamá?" She only shook her head against his shoulder and gestured to the TV screen.

Leo's jaw dropped when he saw his own face staring back at him.
