Chapter 8

I gulped as I took in Adam’s appearance.  Everything from his leather combat boots, his dark washed jeans, to his white tank top screamed danger.  His eyes were almost a whole shade darker grey than usual, and he looked absolutely wicked, lethal even.  His square jaw line was set, I could tell he knew I was staring because he kept biting down, holding back a smile.  The line of his full lips was slowly curving upwards as he rocked his head back in forth.

I could hear his neck crack as he eyed me up and down, “Let’s do this.”

Do what exactly?  I don’t know if Adam and Nereus knew I overheard them, and I don’t know if I should tell them that I had.  Deciding that I would say something about it later, I responded to Adam.

“What exactly is ‘this’?”  As I asked him that I looked over at Nereus.  I had to cover up the choking sound I made with a cough when I got a good look at him.  He was equally as attractive as Adam, but probably close to 15 years older.  He had dark tanned skin, light blue eyes, and light brown hair.  He had wrinkles around his eyes, showing that he’d had his fair share of laughs in his life.  I decided I was being rude because I hadn’t introduced myself before I started staring, so I cut off Adam before he could reply to me and turned my attention to Nereus.

“Hi, I’m Chloe.  You must be Nereus?”  I walked over to him and held out my hand.  If there’s one thing my fake parents taught me, it’s to always properly introduce yourself to someone.

His pale blue eyes wrinkled in amusement as he looked at my hand and held his out and shook it.  He must work with his hands, because they were rough from years of manual labor.

“That would be me.  Adam has told me a lot about you Chloe.  You’re our little mystery huh?”  He ran a hand through his hair and shook his head, as if he were shaking out some crazy thought.  I assume he was thinking back on the conversation he had with Adam.

Thinking back on this conversation, I’m realizing what I was about to do was really rude, but I did it anyways.

“Look, I don’t care who you think birthed me or whatever okay?  All I know is that the people that raised me for seventeen years are being held somewhere by a group of psychopathic men and the only way I’m getting them back is if I find some hidden prophecy.  So, what I’m asking is, do you know what or where the prophecy they want is?”  Nereus sighed, and walked over to sit on the barstool across the kitchen counter.

“You sure know how to cut to the chase, don’t you Chloe Thomas?  Adam did mention you were impatient.”

Adam then shot me a death glare, I mouthed back at him “What?”

He just shook his head at me and turned his attention back to Nereus, setting his jaw in that way that makes him look really scary again.

“I have an idea where the prophecy they want is, but it’s not going to be easy to get it.  I actually need to go over some things and contact some people right now about it, so if you don’t mind Chloe, I’ll leave you with the company of Adam, here.”  I saw Nereus wink at Adam before he turned and smiled at me, as he walked out of the kitchen down a long hallway that went God-knows where.

I sighed, dreading what Adam could possibly have to say to me, let alone what he was planning on doing to try to trigger my powers.

Before I could say something, Adam had his hand wrapped around my upper arm.  “What do you think you’re doing?”  He then started pulling me towards the large sliding glass doors that led to the backyard area.  “HEY!”  He ignored me.
