We all stood still at training the next day waiting for the sergeant to say something. He looked at Eren.
"Eren Jaeger. Are you ready?" The sergeant asked. Eren's belt was attached to the ropes, he was re-doing the balance test.
"Yes, sir!" Eren replied with confidence. He would do anything to fight those Titans.
"Come on, Eren! You can do it." I thought to myself.
"Proceed!" The sergeant ordered. A cadet started winding the handle making the ropes go up and making Eren's feet fly off the ground.
We were all watching Eren intensely, hoping that it goes well. Eren furrowed his eyebrows and held his hands out for balance.
Some of the cadets cheered Eren on for lasting in the air for more than 10 seconds. Suddenly, Eren got distracted and lost his balance, making him fall to the ground.
We all gasped.
"No!" I thought.
Eren was hanging upside-down. The sergeant walked up to him. But Eren didn't want to give up so easily.
"Once more! I can do it!" Eren begged while struggling to get up.
"Lower him." The sergeant commanded. Eren fell on his knees. He looked like he was about to cry.
"Wagner! Please exchange belts with Mr Jaeger." The sergeant said.
"Huh? Yes, sir!" Wagner replied.
Soon, Eren was back up there again. And surprisingly, he was balancing really well!
"Your equipment was defective," The sergeant explained, "If given a piece of functional gear, you might not be worthless after all."
The sergeant held Eren's old belt. "Quartermaster didn't notice this broken clasp. Might have to visit the Supply Depot and crack a couple of skulls."
"He...He still did it. Even while wearing that busted gear. Amazing." One of the cadets gasped in fascination.
"So, you mean I... I didn't wash out?" Eren questioned.
"You made the cut. Now keep training, cadet!" The sergeant replied.
Eren put his fists in the air for victory.
"He made it!" I thought to myself and laughed. Eren confidently smiled. Mikasa looked at him in shock while me and Armin smiled proudly.
"Look, his eyes are saying, 'Check me out!'" Armin smiled.
"They're not." said Mikasa. Bertholdt, Reiner, and Armin gasped and looked at Mikasa.
"His eyes are saying he doesn't have to leave me. Not any more." Mikasa continued.
Eren officially became a soldier like how he dreamed to be.
2 years later, it's year 850 and has been 2 years since we first joined the Cadets.
"Pick up the pace, you lead-heeled laggards!" The sergeant shouted. Me, Mikasa, Eren, Armin and some other cadets were walking in the rain carrying heavy backpacks on our backs, while sergeant Sadies yelled at us from his horse. We were running in a rainy forest.
"Your boots waterlogged, Arlelt?! Let's see some hustle!" Sadies shouted at Armin. Armin was breathing heavily and shuddering from the cold. He was starting to slow down.
"Gear too heavy for you, son? Hell, drop it! Leave it in the mud!" Sadies yelled. Armin looked exhausted.
"The Titans'll have easier work digesting you without all the excess baggage." said Sadies.
