17: ねじれ (plot twist)

"1 week left before everything..." Sunoo thought to himself as he looked outside the window, it was snowing.

"Hi, Sunoo!" Ni-ki opened the door to Sunoo's room, holding up the cake for his birthday. "I have cake today."

Sunoo quickly went out of his bed as he ran towards Ni-ki, falling on his arms once again since he can barely stand up. "Happy birthday, Ni-ki~!" Despite all the pain and his weaknesses, he still wore a smile for Ni-ki's birthday.

"Just because I got your favorite flavor doesn't mean I got it because of you." Ni-ki teased Sunoo, looking at his smile after seeing the cake's flavor. Of course, he got it because of Sunoo.

Sunoo then went back to his bed as he ate Ni-ki's cake straight from the box. "I'm sorry. I told you we'll hang out together on your birthday. Now you're here in the hospital with me."

"It's okay. Jay had to call me anyway." Ni-ki sat next to Sunoo, ruffling his hair. "What do you want to do today, Sunoo?"

"It's your birthday, why are you asking me what I want to do?" Sunoo laughed, dropping the spoon he used to eat cake after feeling pain in his chest.

Ni-ki held Sunoo by the arms, checking on the elder. "Are you okay?"

"Y-yeah! Of course, I am." Sunoo smiled fakely, continuing to eat the cake. However, the pain was hurting him even more than how it usually does, making him scream. "Ni-ki." He then reached for the younger's arms, fainting on them.

Jay immediately went to the room as soon as he heard Ni-ki call for him. He then carried Sunoo, shaking his head after checking upon him. "I'll have to bring him to the ICU."

Ni-ki then carried Sunoo as Jay and he ran to the ICU. There were several doctors in there, including Sunoo's father. They then brought Sunoo in, closing the door which caused Ni-ki to just sit in the waiting area.

Jungwon and Jake came in too, sitting next to Ni-ki. They were supposed to visit their best friend, but one of the nurses told them that Sunoo was rushed here.

"Oh, my gosh. Sunoo should be okay." Jake tightly held his bag, laying head on Jungwon's shoulder.

"Of course, he'll be okay! It's Kim Sunoo." Jungwon smiled reassuringly even if deep inside he knows that Sunoo could barely make it out.

A few minutes later, Jay came outside to greet the three. "Ni-ki..."

"Is he fine?" Ni-ki was already crying at this point because it was his birthday and just the thought of losing someone on his special day hurts him so much.

"Yeah, but we need to transfer the surgery day today. The donor is already inside the room." Jay says.

"Oh Gosh... I didn't even see who they were... but I'm very thankful." Ni-ki remarked.

"Bitch, bitch, bitch, please stay alive, you little bitch..." Jungwon randomly hums while waiting for Sunoo's surgery to be finished.

"I hope he's gonna be fine..." Jake looked at Ni-ki who was already asleep after hours of waiting. "Ni-ki, I don't think now is the time to be sleeping—"

Jungwon held Jake's hand, stopping him from saying the words he wanted to say. "Let him sleep. He's been wasting his free time on Sunoo that he barely got time for himself."

"Ah." Jake then went back to playing with his fingers before he asked Jungwon a question. "How long has it been since the surgery started?"

"6 hours..." Jungwon sighed and held his knees because they were shaking with fear.

Jake hung his head low, feeling fear creep upon him.

"Who's the donor by the way?" Jungwon asks Jake since he was still awake when the donor arrived.

"I'm not sure. I was just staring at the ceiling." Jake says which made Jungwon roll his eyes.

"Well, whoever that person is, I'm thankful."

"Of course we are, we might've lost Sunoo if that person didn't come."

 It's antiseptic, a little bitter with undertones of the artificial fragrance contained in soaps and cleaners. It was a familiar scent and a familiar place.

Sunoo woke up to find himself back in his hospital room, not believing that he's given a second chance to be alive. "Good Morning..." He slowly placed his hand over his chest, not feeling any pain anymore.

He then walked out of bed, walking towards Ni-ki how was still asleep. "Ni-ki..." Sunoo smiled as he kneeled down to Ni-ki's level, ruffling the younger's hair. "Good Morning."

Ni-ki blinked his eyes in confusion, waking up to find Sunoo in front of him. "Sunoo! You should be on your bed to get some rest."

Jungwon and Jake woke up to hearing the two, running to hug Sunoo. "Ah~! Sunoo! We missed you so much!"

Sunoo hugged them back, feeling happy to be alive once again. "I miss both of you too!"

"I actually thought Ni-ki was the one who will donate his heart for you but then I'm happy to see both of you here~!" Jungwon jumped up and down, arms still wrapped around Sunoo's shoulders.

Sunoo was bewildered too. He thought he wasn't gonna see Ni-ki again. He thought Ni-ki was the one who could give his life. "Well, if it wasn't you who gave me this, then who is it?"

"I don't know either." Ni-ki placed his hands inside his pocket, feeling that something isn't right. "I feel weird, this doesn't feel okay."

"Sunghoon?" Heeseung barges inside the room. "Where's Sunghoon?" He asked Ni-ki.

"Why would you be looking for Sunghoon here?" Sunoo asked Heeseung with concern in his eyes.

Heeseung then looked at him from top to bottom, realizing that he's alive and okay. "You're fine."

"Yeah, I had surgery last night!" Sunoo was smiling brightly, not until Heeseung fell to the floor with tears running down his face. "Hey, what's wrong?"

"He did it." Heeseung hid his face using his hands, not believing that his childhood best friend has gone missing.

Ni-ki, Sunoo, Jungwon, Jake, and Jay were confused about why Heeseung was crying about Sunghoon. It's not like something happened to him, right?

"May I ask what happened?" Sunoo sat next to Heeseung, handing the elder a handkerchief.

"Sunghoon... Sunghoon was... He was the one who donated... his heart..." Heeseung teared up even more after bringing out the news that shook Sunoo and Ni-ki.
