SOMETHING was off. Maggie wasn't sure what exactly, but it made the hairs of her arm jump out.
It was a Sunday morning –the first of November to be precise– and Margaret Potter was cleaning the dirty dishes she had left the following night. Without magic.
Why was she spending her time doing something as useless as cleaning? Well, because it took her mind off of things. For the past five days, she had been unable to sleep restfully, she was far too nervous after her brother and sister in law's (who also happened to be one of Maggie's close friends) departure.
With her parents' home completely empty and no new words from the order, Maggie was slowly beginning to lose her mind.
So yes, it was six in the morning and she was cleaning. Her heart thumped in her ears while she stared right at a brownish cat that was standing on the wooden fence of her house.
Maggie could have sworn she had seen that exact same cat somewhere else before; those prying yellow eyes and its posture straight and rigid. A look of complete severity on its face, like someone who was just about to reprimand a child.
And that's when she realized.
The plate slipped off her wet hands to shatter on the sink below, its pieces scattering on the metal pool. A gasp escaped her lips, but it was drowned by the sound of the water coming out of the tap. Her eyes were wide with fear and her hands still had soap on them.
What was Minerva McGonagall doing in her yard? It surely couldn't mean good news.
Her mind shifted to James and Lily, who less than a week ago had fled away to hide from the darkest, most evil, wizard. Had something happened? — Oh no, Harry. They had to be okay, there was no logical reason they wouldn't. All precautions had been taken and as long as Sirius Black kept his mouth shut it would be physically impossible to find them.
But then, why did she have this feeling in her gut that told her something was quite not right? And most of all, why was her old professor on her front lawn?
She rushed outside, forgetting about the dirty dishes – now shuttered – and opening the small backyard door that led her to the open field. Once she was face to face with the cat, she said, her voice sounding anxious, "Professor? Why– What are you doing here?"
