The moment we got off the plane I knew we were about to run into trouble. It was like I could sense it. I could feel danger in the air and found myself fingering the charm on my bracelet getting ready to activate my sword at any moment if needed. I look over at Maya, Aspen and Amethyst, and notice they all look uncomfortable as well, so I guess I am not the only one that can sense the upcoming danger.
We all quickly run through the airport clutching our small backpacks close to us. As soon as we are out of the airport we have a feeling of relief, but it doesn't last as the feeling of dread comes back and this time, it is more intense, more dangerous. I activate my sword and hold it in front of me, at the ready. We all form a line and move swiftly toward a stretch of trees to our left, that will provide a small amount of protection.
We were quite organized, which was strange, seeing as most of the little time I have spent with the Greeks taught me they were anything, but organized. We made it into the trees and formed a sort of circle, so pour backs were all to each other, but we could see everything around us.
I look at the weapons that each of my accomplices are holding, Aspen has his sword given to him by his dad, Maya has a shorter type of sword, simple, but could protect her. Then there was Amy, she had a small and decorative dagger. It wouldn't help much, she probably chose it because it was pretty, fulfilling the Aphrodite reputation, that was almost taken away by Piper. The problem was the dagger was Short and pointless if we were attacked, not to mention it looked dull, the blade looked like a butter knife. I turn to Aspen who is beside me and I am about to warn him of Amy's disadvantage when I spot it, on the edge of the trees.
"Over there!" I about pointing to where I saw it. Maya, Aspen and Amethyst all look over where I pointed and find it, and they get ready. The monster appears to have 6 heads, it was scaly and on four legs. I try to think back on all those lessons at camp, we learned about this, and how to defeat it, but I cant seem to remember.
Then Aspen sees my confusion and says, "Its a Hydra!"
I think again, a hydra.... what did they tell us about them? Something about the heads. Maybe in order to defeat it I have to cut all the heads off... I think to myself. I run forward with my blade in front of me, and slash at one of the heads, right as I do I hear Aspen yelling at me. I couldn't make out what he said, but I assume he is encouraging me to finish what I started. So, I slash off two more heads, when suddenly I am struck from behind. But I cut all the heads on that side off... I look back and see 4 heads where the 2 I cut off were and where I had just cut off the third, I see two more heads forming. Crap, I think, they said NOT to cut the heads off...
I quickly back up trying to create a new strategy. Suddenly I get black spots in my vision and look down and see blood running down my arm from my shoulder. Then my legs begin to give out from under neath me and I begin to fall. Just before I hit the ground I am caught. I look up to see who it was. it was Aspen. "I'm Sorry..." I mutter.
"its okay, I know you were just trying to help."
He then gently put me down and returns to the fight and tried to distract the hydra, while Maya and Amy go to the heart to try and kill it. When the spots on my vision finally dissapear, I sit up and reach into my backpack, and pull out my ambrosia, and take a small piece and eat it. It tastes like pizza... which is strange because I can't figure out why that would be the flavor I longed for?
As soon as I finish the piece of ambrosia I feel better and I get up and get back in the fight, when I walk up beside Aspen, I see that they are struggling. Amy is trying to fight with her small dull dagger and Aspen has to do his beat to protect both of them, as Maya has never really used a sword and clearly Amy wasn't doing very well. Then it happens. One of the heads faces Amy and locks its focus on her and strikes, first biting her and picking her up and then releases her in mid air, she ends up flying straight into a tree, where she hits her head and passes out.
I see Aspen glance at her, and I see the worry in his eyes. "Oh come on! Just go over there and help your girlfriend, she needs it."
"But I cant just abandon you to this fight."
"Yes you can and you will! I will be fine, I will kill it." I look up at his face, "I promise."
He sees the truth in my eyes and the seriousness and runs of f to the tree and helps Amy. And I begin to strategize. I mutter a quick prayer to my dad, then summon all my strength and charge. barely missing one of the heads and straight into its heart. As soon as the blade touches the heart and breaks the skin, the hydra dissolves into dust and disappears .
