Anna, Juliet and me froze immediately and stared at Alex. He balled his fist and stared at me.
I backed away from him, edging closer to the back door. John was right outside and I did not want to cause a scene. My brain was now whirling fast, trying to come up with a solution.
Alex would certainly tell everyone, and if I was caught, they would separate me and John and John would get into serious troubles, or even Anna and Juliet as they had been helping me. I did not think begging Alex would help, as he was so angry now and he would not listen.
“Alex,” Juliet tried to say something, but Alex gave her a death stare that silenced her instantly.
“How could you?” Alex said, eyes on me, voice shaking, “So this John has made you pregnant?”
We did not respond, and he took it as a yes.
“I love you (Yn),” Alex said, now his eyes full of hurt, “How could you do this behind my back?”
“Alex,” I said, trying to act calm, “I – I like you, but not in that sense; you’re a great friend but I do not feel like the way you do towards me.”
Alex furrowed his eyebrows and I saw his lips tremble, “You shouldn’t have done that,”
I took a few more steps back, looking at Alex’s balled fists. I put my hands protectively over my stomach, although I knew he would not possibly hit me.
Alex stepped closer to me as he could see me advancing towards my escape. I immediately turned around and opened the door, practically jumping out of the door.
I scanned my eyes across the line of trees quickly and spotted John standing in his usual spot. He broke into a smile once he saw me. I ran towards him as quickly as I managed, and threw myself onto him.
“John,” I said urgently, pushing him backwards, “We have to move. Now. Run!”
John looked at me with a confused expression and was about to say something when he heard Anna and Juliet scream. I looked back and saw them being pushed out of the doorway, landing on the soft ground outside. A moment later Alex stepped outside, looking for me.
John pulled me tight against him and backed into the forest as unnoticeably as possible. But it was too late. Alex had easily spotted us. He bared his teeth and ran towards us, and Anna and Juliet scrambled to their feet, trying to stop Alex. John pulled me with him and ran into the forest, but I was caught on the arm by Alex.
I yelped in pain, letting go of John’s hand. John turned around and pushed Alex away from me, and Alex stumbled backwards, pulling me with him.
Anna and Juliet had reached us and pulled on Alex’s arms, and John pulled me back into his arms.
“Give (Yn) back!” Alex yelled, and struggled out of Anna and Juliet’s grasp, grabbing John’s shoulders, “You devil! How could you!”
“She’s not yours!” John yelled back, shaking his hands away.
Out of the corner of my eye I noticed people coming out from the house to see what was with the noise, and they were following the lead of my parents.
“How could you get her pregnant?” Alex shouted, and I saw everyone in that group freeze. This was bad.
“John, we have to go,” I whispered to John.
“I’ll kill you!” Alex shot his arms out, plunging at John’s neck.
John, of course, dodged his attack easily and tried to use the opportunity to make our run.
“Don’t let them go!” I heard my father bark, and I heard people running after us. I caught Anna and Juliet trying to hold the crowd back with all their might. I was touched, and sent thanks to them in my heart.
But of course, they broke through their block easily and ran after us. John held my hand securely in his and pulled me through the trees and bushes. I heard people yelling after us, and the faint cries of Anna and Juliet following.
“Someone hold those girls back!” I heard my father yell to the crowd, and a moment later Anna and Juliet were no longer heard.
I was panting crazily, desperate for more oxygen. My legs felt like they would fall off from my body any moment; I felt like fainting.
I stumbled a bit but continued running. John turned and looked at me, and changed direction sharply. I managed to follow his turn in time to avoid tripping over, and we were now running through some very thick bushes. I raised my free hand to shield my face.
I was focusing on dodging the branches that I did not realize the sounds behind us had become fainter and fainter. At last they were no longer heard.
John turned again and the bushes became thinner. When we were out of the bound of the think bushes, John changed direction again and we slowed down a bit. We quick walked and finally reached the little hut John built.
Once we were inside the hut, I slumped against the wooden wall, panting and gasping for air. John closed the door and pulled me against his chest, and I let my body rest against him. I could hear that his heart rate was faster than usual and he was panting slightly. His job must have trained him well that he did not get really tired after so much running.
“I’m sorry,” John murmured against my hair.
“It’s okay,” I half gasped, “I should have been more careful.”
“What should we do now…” John whispered.
“I was going to tell you I’ve made my decision,” I said, and I felt John tense up when he heard that.
I pulled back and hooked my hands behind his neck, and John’s arms tightened around my waist, “I love you, John, and I want to live with you – and our baby – together for the rest of my life. That is the one thing that I want all my life. Just a simple, peaceful and happy life, with you.
“(Yn),” a smile began to form on John’s face, “I love you.”
He crushed his lips onto mine and we made out for a few minutes.
Our lips detached and we gasped for air, “We have to go now, or they’ll find us soon,” John whispered.
My face fell, remembering everyone that I loved, especially Anna and Juliet, and John noticed my mood change, “(Yn), everything will be okay here,” he said.
“What will happen to Anna and Juliet?” I croaked.
“They’ll be alright; as far as I know, their parents are kind people and so are yours, so they will eventually forgive them, especially the women – they will definitely understand,”
“I’ll miss them though,”
“I’m sorry for everything,” John looked away, “I wish I had never come along to stir up everything for you.”
I put my hand against his cheek and stared into his eyes, “John, don’t say that, you’re my everything and I’ll be glad to have you in my life no matter what,”
John kissed me on my lips and turned around to pull out a bag from a crate.
“I’ve got some essentials ready in case we have to leave immediately,” he told me, flinging the bag across his back, “Luckily I got them ready early!”
He took my hand and we left the hut, and we walked through the forest in the opposite direction of my house.
“Where are we going?” I asked.
“The town which I was born in,” John replied quietly, “There was a gang raid and many people were killed… Including my family and friends. That’s why I’ve chosen to be an assassin to get rid of the bad people. After my work was done there, I moved to a couple of other towns and tried my best to stop the crimes. Now that I’m going to quit, maybe we should go back there…”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” I said softly, feeling bad for him and I squeezed his hand, “It must have been very hard for you. But if we go back there won’t you get reminded of the past?”
He shook his head slightly, “I want to see how it is now; I’ve got over the past and it won’t upset me anymore. And I’ve got a house in the countryside, so it should still be empty as it’s unlikely to have people there to touch that house.”
I nodded, and we took a rest in the forest. We sat against the trunk of a huge tree, and I rested my head on John’s shoulder. He wrapped an arm around me as I was shivering a bit, and I eventually fell asleep, listening to John humming to himself.
