Just then Gulf heard a rumbling sound. The sirens of the fire trucks were coming closer. But it was already too late.
Gulf opened his eyes a little and noticed Mew had stopped moving. Suddenly, he saw Rachan's room. They were blocked by a wall of fire.
This is really happening!
The dreamlike feeling instantly disappeared. Mew had run into the burning building to save Gulf.
"Mew. You shouldn't have," Gulf scolded in a quiet voice.
Now Mew would die, too. Gulf couldn't move, that was dead certain. But at least Mew could run away to save himself.
"Get out...go," Gulf ordered. "Leave...me. I'm a...goner..."
He could only think of Mew's escape. Mew wasn't injured yet and could still move on his own. Gulf was just heavy baggage.
Mew shook his head. When he met Gulf's eyes, he smiled gently.
"I can't do that, you're uninsured," he said. "If you die here, it would be a massive loss to Lovely."
His voice still sounded calm and gentle and full of love
Suddenly, something collapsed nearby, pushing Mew to the ground. Gulf knew the flames were coming closer. Then something else collapsed. Mew pushed Gulf to the floor. It was getting even harder to breathe now, and he felt his consciousness drifting further away.
Just then, he felt Mew's body over him, shielding him from danger. To be held like this made Gulf feel content, even in the middle of a disaster. He felt absolutely smothered in love.
Mew's lips touched his. With the kiss of life, he breathed air into Gulf's lungs.
"I'll share my oxygen with you," Mew whispered.
But Gulf just wanted Mew to run away as fast as possible. Why should Mew even save him? He had never done a single thing in his life that was worthwhile.
Gulf felt the end was coming, but he wasn't that scared. He had been prepared for death ever since he had become a Yakuza.
He couldn't restart his life now. He couldn't press a reset button. This was the end.
With a little oxygen in his lungs again, Gulf suddenly recalled what he was doing here in the first place.
The old man, is he all right?
Nothing was real anymore. He never wanted to become this scum who threatened people and ripped them off. He had wanted to hide himself from Rachan. So the old man never found out the painful truth.
But why was Mew still here in his thoughts? For some reason, Mew had managed to gently crack open the walls around his heart.
"Wh-why....?" Gulf sobbed.
It had been years since he'd cried like this, back when he felt completely, utterly alone.
He felt Mew's lips again, blowing air into his empty lungs. The oxygen also brought warmth. He felt full of life, like a newborn child.
If I survive...
If he did, maybe he could start again. Give up his Yakuza life. Maybe he could bravely step back into the real world and find the happiness he always longed for.
Just as he slipped out of consciousness, Gulf heard Mew's voice.
"Gulf, don't cry," the man said. "Seeing you cry makes me never want to leave you. You know, I never wanted to leave you in the first place."
