A few days later, Gulf cheerfully put on his new suit and headed to Lovely's Kantou branch office.
He was still a debt collector. In the past, wearing a Yakuza suit automatically made people give their money to him. Now, it didn't really matter. Gulf had so much experience, he easily collected most debts no matter what he was wearing.
Besides, the new suit made him feel good.
Now, pedestrians didn't nervously move out of his way, and high school girls often commented on his good looks. He really enjoyed this new sense of well being.
This time, the company with a debt was called Heart System. Lovely's previous branch manager had arranged the loan, three hundred million of outstanding debt which really stressed out Mew. They had pushed Heart System to sell their real estate, but now another company was making claims on the company's assets.
"Well, try to make sense of the situation and collect as much as you can," Mew told Gulf.
Suddenly, the phone on his desk rang, Mew picked it up, signaling Gulf to wait a minute. Gulf sipped the coffee that the secretary had given him and looked around the large room.
He'd been here many times before. There was the impressive large desk and a luxurious sofa. Everything suited Mew's expensive taste.
Assistant to the Branch Manager. Does that mean I'd work in here?
Mew's voice suddenly interrupted Gulf's thoughts.
He's speaking Korean?
Mew was talking to someone in perfect Korean. Now he was even laughing, like they had just shared a joke. He sounded completely at ease.
That's amazing.
Gulf was impressed. He knew Mew was smart, but this completely blew him away.
After Mew agreed to another meeting, the conversation came to an end. He hung up the phone and turned back to Gulf.
"Sorry I made you wait," he said.
"No problem. You speak Korean, eh?" Gulf said with admiration.
Mew just shrugged. "Not very fluently, just enough to do business. You haven't been abroad much, have you? The week after next, I'm off to Korea. Why don't you come too? While I attend boring business meetings, you can go sightseeing."
"What kind of boring business meetings?" Gulf asked.
"We have some spare capital, but there are no attractive investment opportunities here right now," Mew explained. "We're creating an overseas fund, so I'll be meeting with investors about that."
Spare Capital?
The concept of extra money was completely foreign to Gulf. He took another sip of the superb coffee and frowned.
"I don't have a passport," he admitted.
"Get one," Mew said. "There should be time before we leave."
Another phone call came in. "Yes, he's taking care of it. The funds for this election? Yes. Please let him continue."
Must be a politician, Gulf thought.
Probably a parliamentary representative, since they were talking about the general election. Gulf took a cookie from a plate on the desk and nibbled on it. Mew was using a soft coaxing voice, just like a corrupt official. He hung up and immediately called one of his employees.
"Yes, the election money," Mew said. "Fund up to two hundred million with no security needed. By the day after tomorrow. Yes, the review body."
Mew looked so different when he was working. Gulf had never seen him like this before. It seemed that if you wanted to be a branch manager, you had to speak different languages. You also had to pander to politicians. Gulf was absolutely stunned by the huge sums of money being offered.
He stood up and brushed the cookie crumbs off his suit. The third phone call seemed to be going on and on, so he decided to go out to make the collection. He waved at Mew as he left, not wanting to disturb him.
Assistant to the Branch Manager?
Gulf's mind was racing as he plodded down the stairs. The manager's office was on the top floor of the four-story building, the first and second floors were devoted to large financial loans. Lovely's employees seemed quite capable, and Gulf could hear managers giving strict orders to listen.
His new suit didn't attract as much attention as the old one. He smiled as he remembered his first visit here, when they had regarded him as some rare beast that might bite at any provocation. Back then, he was quickly ushered into a private reception room.
