AA gave him a wary smile. Mew gently put Gulf down, then grabbed AA's neck.

He was about to slam him to the wall when First screamed, "STOP!"

Though First was infuriated with AA, he didn't really hate him. Mew stopped in his tracks as First turned to face them, looking uncomfortable.

"We don't have to hit him," First said. "He'll talk, won't you?"

AA looked intently at First for a moment, then licked his lips and started to talk. Hatred dripped from his every word.

"I told Gulf that the hospital knew Lovely's assistant branch manager had beaten up my employees. I also told him we were notifying the police. I said, if he didn't want that to happen, then he had to be my man."

"I see now," Mew muttered.

AA had never really threatened Gulf. He threatened Lovely, Mew's family business.

Mew now knew for sure why Gulf had tried to leave him.

You wanted to protect me?

His heart skipped a few beats. Gulf had been trying to protect him. He'd taken off and let himself be kidnapped---all for Mew.

Now that Mew knew the truth, he had no use for AA. He took the payment demand from his pocket and handed it to First.

"First, collect this from AA instead of Gulf," he directed.

"Yes. For the boss!" First gladly replied.

"Like hell I'll give you any---" AA started to say.

"Just pay up, AA," Mew snapped. "Do you want to make Lovely your enemy? You'll also be paying Gulf's medical bills."

Lovely had close ties with the Kantou Asahigumi, plus lots of financial muscle. They'd have absolutely no difficulty finding other regional gangs to hire. All it took was money to have a gang on your side.

Though AA didn't seem the type to hush and pay up, he was really tired of fighting. Instead he just nooded.

"Got it," he said tersely.

Out of the corner of his eyes, Mew watched AA and First leave.
