Chapter 5 - Corvus
Holly woke up in a cocoon of warmth. Her stomach grumbled, the last time she had eaten was the night before, but she had missed the previous breakfast and lunch. She pet Raven's head, which still lay in her lap. Looking down she noticed that the dragon's body heat had actually burned through the snow that used to cover the ground around them. Now they were laying on the dirt ground in the forest. Well, Holly was mostly laying on Raven and Raven was laying on the ground.
Wondering what time it was, Holly tapped Raven's wing which was acting like a roof over her head. Raven's wing twitched back exposing a pink and orange sky. The dragon's eyes were still closed and for a moment Holly couldn't bear to wake him; he looked so peaceful in sleep. But looking back up to the sky above the tops of the pines Holly knew the sun was rising and that she had to get going if she didn't want to be late. Holly shook the beast awake ignoring his grumbled protests. Then the two of them headed to the Ashridge manor to grab some food for the day.
Soundlessly sliding in though the backdoor, Holly ran to the Kitchen on silent feet. She noticed again that the string tugging her towards Raven returned as she left him at the forest line. Holly also noticed that she felt more and more anxious and unsettled the further she was from the dragon.
As soon as she got to the homely kitchen she saw the wrapped breakfast and lunch that Aven had no doubt left for her to find. The small act felt like a punch to the gut. Aven was the only one who actually paid enough attention to notice her routines and though he never commented on it he was obviously always looking out for her. Stuffing the food into the satchel that lay beside it, Holly raced back out of the manor before anyone could see her.
Holly kept to the forest as she made her way across town not wanting to have to leave the dragon that stomped through the snow alongside her. She had wondered if she should have grabbed him some food from the manor. But this train of thought was abruptly stopped when the massive dragon had stalked and caught a fox. Raven had acted like a snow leopard as he soundlessly crawled towards the unsuspecting animal. Then with lightning quick speed that no animal should have possessed, he sprang upon the fox and ripped it apart. Leaving the previously pristine snow stained a bright red.
Holly thought that Raven was rather lucky that the townspeople of Brisque did not like the pine forest, some old superstition that carried on even after the collapse of religion. Otherwise someone would have seen Ravens tracks or ended up running into the massive beast. But with the ever-present winter, tracks never stayed for long. Plus Holly had the sneaking suspicion that if Raven did not to be found he simply wouldn't be.
Eventually the pair loved by darkness made it to the other end of town, the side that was closest to the large volcano. The rich earth would have at one point been the most expensive as it would have had the most nutrients. But as the seasons had stopped turning, the richness of the soil really didn't matter when no plant could weather the northern conditions.
