How the world ended...

Chapter 1 - The beginning of the end

Can the cold cause you to hallucinate? Because the thing standing in front of Holly could only have come from the depths of someone's imagination. Though it would have to have been her own imagination as she was the only one here. But, since she was the only one here, if she never told anyone about what she had seen then was it even real. Most of her life only Holly saw and sometimes it made her wonder if she was real. Or if she was just a part in someone else's story. A small part at that.

The snow fell heavy and thick about her, catching on her lashes, blurring her vision, making the scene feel like it had walked out of one of her old story books. For miles the landscape was covered in a thick blanket of snow, making the pine forest virtually soundless, the only disturbance was her own shoes crushing the snow, maring its perfect surface. Holly thought that it felt like being underwater, when everything quieted and the light dimmed. There was a sort of cool tranquility that fell over you in that moment, something that tugged at you to stay down there a little longer, maybe even forever. To ignore that burning in your lungs and welcome the peace that the waters offered.

That was exactly what had pulled Holly out here in the first place. Chasing that feeling of peace, believing that if she kept walking into this forest it would eventually quiet her mind, silence her thoughts. So a few miles into the snow covered forest, her breath fogging before her, her fingertips turning blue, she had come face to face with the creature, or hallucination. She wasn't sure which it was just yet. Its black eyes stared right back at her, looking as if it were thinking the same.
