"Every new friend
is a new adventure."
The compass led to a forest. I turned back, hesitant to enter. What if my parents are worried? Who am I kidding? They didn't even know I left. I continued to follow the mysterious compass. The leaves and stick make noise every time I take a step.
I made it to a clearance. There was a cave. The compassed pointed into it. I took a deep breath and went inside. There were dripping water and stones everywhere. A white haze came from in front of me. I stopped.
A swirling circle of white and grey was in front of me. I can't believe it. I turned to leave. This isn't happening. I suddenly felt like I was getting pulled back. I was being pulled towards the portal and couldn't stop it. I got closer and closer to the swirling nightmare. I screamed for help but no one could hear me.
I fell backward into the portal but landed on grass. The grass isn't green though. It was light blue and the sky was light green. The clouds were grey and the sun looked like the moon. I looked around. I was in a forest still but I could see people. I ran towards them.
Once I made it out of the trees I noticed that these weren't normal people. Some had skin that was a color from the rainbow. Others had tails and ears. People with multiple limbs or one eye. I stood in the center of it all. It looked like a marketplace from long ago. I saw a large castle in the distance. Something suddenly ran into me.
"Watch it, kid!" A man yelled. I turned to apologize but got pushed again. I tried to get away but ended up falling and landing on the red dirt.
"Ow.." I mumbled dusting myself off.
"Need a little help?" I looked up. A boy with green-tinted skin reached his hand out to me. His clothes were dirty and ragged. He had a red line around his neck. I took his hand and stood up.
"T-Thank you," I said. The boy looked at me.
"You're not from here, are you?" The boy asked.
"I-I Uhm. Well-" I stuttered.
"It's fine. We accept anyone here in Kitition! Well, I do. The king might not. Haha! He's very...controlling." The boy laughed. I nodded. "What's your name? I'm Sub."
"Denis," I replied. Sub smiled and grabbed my hand. He pulled me behind some of the cart shops. He sat down on an upside-down bucket.
"So. What brings you to Kitition? I would want to be anywhere BUT here." I sat down on the ground.
"Uhm C-Can I trust you?" I asked. I don't know what to do. I just want to go back home. Sub nodded and leaned closer to me.
"I-I want to get back to my world. I'm not from this...place." I explained.
"Wait. Wait. Wait. You're not from one of the kingdoms?! Does Shapholan, Cido, or Sonocaea sound familiar?" I shook my head. Sub looked shocked.
"Well welcome to Theuton, my friend!" Sub cheered and stood up.
"I can help you. You just have to do something for me in return." I nodded.
"Please. I'll do anything." I called. Sub smiled. He grabbed my hand and ran into the forest of backward trees. The leaves were brown and the trunks were green. I saw a black and blue striped tent in the distance. Sub ran towards it. It was a huge circus tent. It looked worn down and destroyed.
"What is this place?" I asked. Sub let go of my hand and turned to me.
"It used to be a famous circus! Until the owner of it tried to burn it down. It's abandoned now. Only the owner lived...and one other." Sub ran into the tent.
"Sketch! I'm back!"
I followed Sub into the tent. It was huge. I saw a bunch of metal wires hanging from a bean. It seemed to be holding something, or someone.
It was held about 3 feet off the ground. As I got closer, It started to look like a person. Although its hips and legs faced down while the rest of its body faced up. Its head hung backward. It was dressed like a jester with orange and turquoise. Its eyes were buttons and it had a large smile. It was tangled pretty well. Does he want me to free this life-sized doll?
"I brought a friend! Maybe he can free you." Sub said to the doll.
"Is it..alive?" I asked.
"Yes!" The doll called. I screamed and jumped. "And IT would appreciate it if you don't call him that."
"S-sorry." I mumbled. "Uh- Who are you?"
"Sketch!" The doll's button eyes turned yellow. "They change depending on my mood."
Sketch said.
"How'd you get like this?"
"Weeeell, my owner started a fire one show night. I was up there on that platform at the top with my brother. The owner pushed me off and got me stuck in these metal wires. He cast a spell on them, preventing anyone from breaking the wires. The only way for me to be free is if someone more powerful overrides the spell." Sketch explained. Sub whispered something to Sketch and grabbed my hand again. He pulled me through the forest again back to the marketplace.
"Are we just going to leave him there?!" I yelled. Sub shook his head.
"He'll be fine! We need to find-" Sub was cut off my blaring trumpets. I quickly turned and saw a man with four arms and eyes. His eyes were all light purple. He had a crown on his head and a long cloak.
There was a slightly smaller figure next to him. He looked the same structure-wise. The smaller one's hair had bleached tips and a smaller crown. I assumed that was the prince. The prince looked like he didn't want to be there. Sub smiled. The king went over to a cart and the prince looked around. He looked directly at us and motioned to the side. Sub pulled me over to an area and the prince quickly ran over.
"Dad finally let me leave the castle! It's so great out here!" The prince exclaimed to Sub. Sub's smile grew wider.
"Alex, we need you to meet here at 1 pm. We need to see if you can overpower the spell." Sub whispered. The prince or Alex nodded and ran back to his father.
"So what do you need me for again?" I asked.
"Oh, nothing. I just wanted a new friend!" Sub replied. I laughed and lightly punched his shoulder.
