Chapter 16

We reach the door and for once, nobody leaves to their rooms. They went straight to the living room and were about to sit down. "Okay, first of all, this is Esme's new couch. We need clean clothes before we sit on it. Everybody needs to change." Rosalie looks at Paul in discomfort. "What about the d- I mean Paul?" I notice the slip, but she's trying. "Paul didn't fight in his clothes, so he should be fine. I'll be back in two minutes at most." I rush upstairs with my sisters behind me. "Rosie, thank you for trying. I understand if you slip, but at least you're making an effort." She smiles and helps me pick out the outfit I will wear to meet the elders. All of this is done at vampire speed, so the two minute promise is kept.

I get back downstairs with a book in my hand and sit down to wait. I don't open it because Edward wants to read it. Paul comes over and sits next to me, leaving some space between us. I hand the book to Edward when he comes down the stairs. "So, Paul, what do you like to do for fun?" I smile at him in hopes of easing his nerves. "I love listening to music. I'm into classic rock mostly." My smile gets wider. "Who's your favorite to listen to?" He doesn't even blink and responds, "Queen is the best rock band in the world. I will never choose another." I nod in agreement, and the rest of the family comes in before we can continue the conversation.

"Well, Paul, we would definitely love to get to know you. I believe introductions are in order. I'm Carlisle, the leader of our coven and Maddison's father for all intents and purposes. This is my wife and mate, Esme, her mother. This is Edward, Rosalie, Emmett, Jasper, and Alice. We are all rather protective of Maddison. She is physically the youngest of us, so we do everything to keep her safe." The rest of the family nods along, Emmett and Jasper cross their arms to look intimidating as well.

"My name is Paul Lahote. I shifted at 18, so that's what I'll be for a while. I have some anger issues, but I'm working on them. The shift doesn't exactly help it either, but Sam's been figuring it out with me. I live with my dad, but he's not around much so I'm mainly at Sam and Emily's house." We all smile at him and agree to table the conversation until after we go meet the Elders. Seeing the new Chief Black will be interesting.
