Main POV

"Philip, this is a first in our generation. Just make sure that this will be the last in the entire history"

"Yes, sir"

"Forget the politics. This is a human right"

The first call with the Director of National Intelligence played inside Director Philip's head, when the news was broken to him. The tragic news, one that will haunt the Director for all his life.

"Philip? Where are you at the moment?" The DNI sounded very weary down the line and out of breath.

"At the office, sir! How m-"

"Good. Listen. All ears. I just now received a news. Unexpected one."

"Okay, sir..."

"A bad one."

The Director gulped, as a string of possibilities flowed in to his head at those words. The DNI  seemed to be struggling openly as he kept letting out heavy sighs down the line.

"It's about Senator Keats"

A heavy dead weight dropped inside the Director.

Senator Michael Keats. The Democratic candidate for the the Presidential Election 2020.

The Election....is he loosing?

Statistical analysis done from the postal votes often bring out predictions which turn out to be nearly accurate as the final result. The Intelligence agencies are also part of this analysis but it's mostly an FBI duty as its an domestic activity. The Director half heartedly made up his mind to hear the news. If the Senator was indeed losing, it was all up to the rest of the voters to help him climb back up. There were many ways to achieve that, both legally and illegally. The Director decided to think about the illegal steps later knowing how much the Senator despised treason. 'But before everything, learn to pray' the Senator's calming voice resonated in his head, out of nowhere. 'Learn to pray because Earth has no sorrow that Heaven can't heal.'

The Director was silently preparing his mind for a calm prayer when the DNI spoke.

"The White House is placed under immediate surveillance"

It didn't make sense at all. The Director frowned in apparent confusion. Surveillance? The White House? But if it's a matter about the Senator-

"Yesterday. At that dinner for the Democrats at the White House. Given by the President." The DNI had brisk sentences

"Hope it went well, sir-"

"-might as well call it the last dinner of the Senator"

"...pardon, sir?" said the Director, after a tiny pause.

He was definitely missing something...

A long, heavy sigh came from the phone.

"The Senator....was found dead in a washroom"

"We need to get to the bottom of this today itself, Phil, it has upset the whole Election applecart!"

"What type of story is going to be fed in to the media? Obviously the Senator's associates have to continuously issue updates!"

"So don't feed updates then! The Chief of State is already ahead of us, buddy. He's keeping things under control."

The group of CIA and MPD officials were making their way to the Director's office from the helipad.

As an incident threatening the highest administration tier of the country has occurred, the MPD refers to the Intelligence agencies like the FBI and CIA as an aid in investigations. The CIA helps track any foreign involvement while the FBI tracks domestic activity. Although the FBI is endowed with law enforcement powers, the CIA is not. They just watch and report. But there was also a specific reason the MPD had more attention at the CIA.

The late Senator......was the ex-CIA Director.

The Director of the CIA is appointed by the President of US and the Senate will confirm it. He will report to the Director of National Intelligence. Senator Michael Keats served as the Director for 10 years and has been a pioneer behind the reason for CIA's increased global respect and recognition. His tenure serves as an inspiration to several officials including Director Philip who served as the Controller of the Office of Security.

Captain Roger was under a stern belief that the CIA might hold extreme insider details about the late Senator, which would eventually help them create a timeline of events in his life that has led to his untimely demise. The late Senator has always been a joy to everyone who has met him, Captain Roger being one. He used to pay frequent visits to the MPD and has always been a grounded gentleman with a brilliant work ethic. After hearing that he has been nominated as the 2020 Presidential Candidate, Captain Roger had a personal belief that the Senator will have an easy win and later on, it turned out to be a reality. President Emmanuel Jefferson was one of the best Presidents US had ever seen, but the Senator would have been the best. As of now, the Senator was already winning from the postal votes.

Till now.

That's what the public thinks. The Democratic party supporters doesn't know that their savior has breathed his last already. One day they will. That day might be today but not for now as the Chief of State has taken the authority of keeping away the media eyes away from the investigations.

Soon the men arrived at the conference suite. Displaying the CIA's addiction to strong security, a tiny LED blinked at the door detecting the presence of the guests. But as the detectives' details were fed in to the cloud database temporarily for a time limit, the scanner immediately identified the individuals and entry was granted. If not, the emergency alarms would have been activated to bring in security to clear the intruders.

The other executives who were waiting inside, rose to greet the men. As per the Captain's previous request of beverage, there were five filled glasses standing on the opposite side of the table. The Director introduced his employees before sitting at the head chair while the detectives sat at the opposite side facing the CIA officers. The long screen behind the Director lit up with the CIA logo.

"Mm... excellent nosh you have here, Phil " Captain Roger had a hushed compliment after trying out his drink.

The Chief Operating Officer who was handling the background screen, fed in some intelligence data collected about the election in the past week.

"Roger, now how can we help the MPD?" The Director said.

"Yes, but first up, you need to know the true nature of the situation. Boys, bring out the news" At Captain's command, one officer pulled out an envelope with the MPD seal and handed it to the Director who opened the envelope hastily.

He pulled out the contents.

His eyes seem to pop out at first glance. As he had been expecting inspection documents, the contents in his hand made him squirm so much that he was sure it was clear from his face although he tried hard to keep a fixed face. All he could do was...stare.

"Yes, Phil, this is the crime we are talking about"

Pictures of the crime scene.
