Part of the Swordcraft Academy collection. Kirito and Asuna's first encounter.

After the two years he'd spent traveling after leaving Rulid with Eugeo, Kirito encountered a lot of different people. All of which were fascinated by the two boys' stories. All but one.

A girl, a Swordcraft trainee just like him and Eugeo. Asuna Yuuki. He knew she was a noble, at least, since she had a last name. But other than that, she was a total mystery to him.

So he started to watch. And he noticed things about Asuna. First of all, she had the highest scores on all of the Sacred Arts exams. He also knew that she often brought her own meals to the dining hall.

Regardless, other than the many talents he knew she possessed—cooking, studying, fighting, practically everything—he also knew one more thing about her.

She deliberately avoided him. At first, he thought she was just a little shy or antisocial until he saw her talking to all of their classmates. Even Eugeo exchanged notes with her from time to time. But if Kirito even started to approach her, she'd turn away or walk off somewhere else.

"It isn't fair, Eug!" Kirito voiced his displeasure to his friend, laying on his bed tossing a crumpled piece of paper into the air.

"I don't know why you care so much," the flaxen-haired boy replied, not looking up from his studies. "What makes her so different from the other people who hate you?"

"Because it makes no sense!" He sat up and swung to hang his legs off the bed. "Why doesn't she like me? I haven't even done anything!"

"Yet."

"Whatever," the boy groaned and walked over to the window. Dark clouds were beginning to form above the campus, indicating a storm later on.

He glanced down and something immediately caught his eye. A student with long chestnut hair and unmistakable braid in the back.

"Asuna!" He exclaimed aloud.

"Would you stop whining about her already? I need to finish this."

"No, look! She's walking out into the forest!" Kirito pointed down. Curious, his partner stood and peered down as well.

"Oh, she is. I wonder what she's doing...Not that it's any of our business." Eugeo commented, returning to his seat.

Kirito frowned as he watched her. If she was out for too long, she'd get stuck in the storm. She might even get sick.

He made his decision and turned, dashing to grab the coat of his uniform.

"Kirito, no."

"Too late!" He shouted as he dove out the window, scaling down the building.

"Kirito!" Eugeo shouted after him and let out an exasperated sigh. He shook his head and walked over to the dresser, taking out fresh clothes and setting them on his roommate's bed. He then sat back down and got back to work.

Meanwhile, Kirito landed neatly on the ground and dashed off to the forest. In hindsight, he probably should've grabbed some sort of extra cover against the upcoming rain, seeing as his coat wasn't much help. Whatever.

He finally reached his destination and stopped, leaning against a tree. After catching his breath he noticed the sound of metal clanging.

"Is that—" He pushed off the tree and followed the sound, cursing himself for forgetting his sword. It was just a practice sword, but it was better than nothing if Asuna was in trouble.

The noise slowly became louder as he ran until he spotted a small riverbed in the distance. On the other side stood Asuna, holding a thin silver sword.
