The darkness that enveloped the car was comforting in a way, like if you couldn't see what lies ahead, it couldn't hurt you. Though, you had no reason to be afraid. You had Kuroo by your side. He protected you, and he would continue to protect you, right? No matter how comforting the thoughts, that didn't stop your mind from wandering as you rested your head against the cool glass of the window and stared out into the dead of night, the only noise being the soft hum of the car around you.
What would lie ahead for you both?
"Kuroo?" You asked in almost a whisper.
He hummed in response, his eyes glancing in your direction for a brief moment.
"What are we gonna do if...if something bad happens to one of us?" You couldn't bring yourself to look at him, only stared out the window, watching as the small amount of luminescence the moon provided gave you just enough to see the outlines of the trees.
"Something bad? Like what?"
"Like, if one of us gets hurt."
"Depending on how bad it is, I'm sure we can handle it. I've treated enough sprains and cuts to know a bit about injuries." His finger tapped restlessly on the steering wheel, his other hand resting on the center council.
"What if it's something we can't handle?" You looked his way now, noticing how his finger hadn't stopped it's tapping. "Like if we break a bone or something?"
"Then we go to the hospital." His eyes narrowed as he attempted to shift his focus to the road ahead, his finger continuing to tap the steering wheel.
"What if we get recognized?" Your body turned to him now, your legs held up against yourself and your knees facing his direction.
"Okay, what's with all the 'what if's'?" He bit, turning to you for a moment, his eyes glancing back at the road for quick second intervals.
"We need a plan for things like that! I mean, did you even consider what you would do if one of us got hurt?"
"Of course I did! But I'm sorry if I was a little too preoccupied with everything to come up with a plan for a bunch of 'what if' situations!" His tone rose a bit, causing you to shift slightly in your seat.
"So you just dove into all this without a solid plan?! Ya'know, now that we're on the topic, do you even know where the hell we're going??" You gestured towards the empty road that seemed to stretch forever ahead.
He let out a low growl before answering. "I told you the first twenty times you've asked, I don't know. I have a vague idea, but if you would just shut the fuck up for two minutes maybe I could figure it out!" His head snapped in your direction as his voice finally reached it's peak, his volume and words stabbing into your eardrums and causing you to wince. It was then that you had realized.
This man has killed someone. I watched him...kill somebody. He's fully capable of murder, who's to say he won't go after me next??? I don't know him, not really...
As the thoughts were viciously slammed into your head, Kuroo had noticed you didn't respond, instead you had backed away as far as the small confines of the car would let you, a look of shock and fear mixed on your features. You had let your head drop down between your shoulders as you fiddled with your hands.
If he was being honest, in that moment, he could feel the fear radiating off of you, a deep hurt settling in his chest at your expression. He couldn't let you see that, though. So, he simply scoffed and turned his head back to the dark street. The attempt to keep his eyes open growing more and more difficult as he drove.
