*knock knock*

A couple gentle rasps on the motel door was enough to jolt your body out of it's slumber and into panic mode. At your sudden rise, Kuroo blinked away the tiredness and slowly sat up next to you, his hair just as messy as usual.

The stranger knocked again, the knocks short and soft, before a small voice was heard from the other side. It was muffled, barely audible, but it didn't sound like police. In fact, it didn't really sound like an adult at all.

You shoved the sheets off your body and slowly made your way over to the door, glancing one eye through the peep hole. Kuroo blinked at your sudden inspection of the door, rubbing his tired eyes once again before getting up himself and joining you by the door.

He shot you a look that said 'who is it?' while wordlessly communicating in fear that it could be police or someone else there to get you. You pulled your eye back from the peephole and shook your head.

"There's nobody there." Despite not seeing anyone, you still spoke in a hushed tone.

As if on que, another small series of light rasps made you and Kuroo jump back. The knocks seemed more desperate, more pleading as they increased in number and speed.

Kuroo moved you behind him with his right arm, switching to his left one as you gripped the back of his shirt while he slowly undid the latch. He took a deep breath and twisted the handle, opening the door just enough to where he could peek his head out. You were positioned behind him, not being able to see what lied at the other side of the door and tapped his back.

"Who is it?" You whispered.

"Uh..." Kuroo dropped his left arm that had been protectively shielding you and straightened his stance while opening the door fully now. You snuck around and furrowed your brows at the sight in front of you.

A small boy, possibly around 6 or 7, was stationed in front of your door, a small teddy bear clutched in his arms as he bounced on his heels impatiently while looking up at you both with scared eyes.

You shot Kuroo a look and he only shrugged before kneeling down to meet the boys small stature.

"Hey, bud. You okay?" His voice heightened a few octaves from his normal deepened tone as he spoke, possibly trying to come off a bit more friendly.

"N-no." The kid sniffed and hugged his bear tighter to his chest as small droplets began to form in his eyes. "Um...can you help me?"

"With?" Kuroo tilted his head.

"I can't find my mom..." the kid sniffed again, glancing in your direction before returning his look to Kuroo.

You leaned down to Kuroo's ear and whispered.  "How the hell do you lose a kid at a motel?"

He only shrugged and you turned to the small child, who wiped his eye with his sleeve. "Where did you see her last?"

His eyes darted to yours. "When we were in our room. She said she had to go grab something, then she wrote something on a piece of paper and left, but she didn't come back. So I opened the door and tried to find her-"

"Wait, wait. You left the room? By yourself?" You questioned, shaking your head. The boy softly nodded and wiped his eyes once more.

Kuroo sighed and stood up, his towering height making the boy take a step back to look up at him and you rose to your feet as well.
