-8 years later-
Jessica sat at the kitchen table waiting for her son, Nicholas, to finish getting ready.
"Nic, you're gonna be late for school!" Jessica said impatiently.
"Okay, Okay! I'm coming!" said back a younger voice.
The sandy blonde made his way downstairs to where his mother was sitting, holding his backpack for him. Nicholas quickly put it on and dashed to the car.
After they had been settled in, Jessica began driving to the familiar route of Wilson school. It was a new establishment, and Jessica had met some of the teachers who were very kind and sincere, although she hadn't met the principal yet.
"Mom?" Nicholas asked, kicking his legs on the front seat.
"Yes, sweetie? Also, could you please stop kicking the seat?" she asked.
"The other day, Marcus was going to go to the carnival with his dad. Where is dad so he can take me?" The eight year old asked.
Jessica felt a twinge of heartbreak as to what her dear son had to go through. She knew how hard it was to live without a father figure, she had been through it. Despite all the sadness, Jessica had to answer with the same answer she always had before.
"Nicholas, I know that you have always been wondering about the whereabouts of your father, but remember what I said?" she asked.
"That you'll tell me when I'm older," he replied, a feeling of sadness coming over him.
"Hey, don't be sad! Moms can be fun, too. How about we go to get ice cream after school?" Jessica said, trying to repair his mood. It always hurt her deeply when he was in any pain.
"Yes!" Nicholas said, his cheery mood being restored.
And with that, they had arrived to the school.
