Chapter 27 - A Ring for Pippa

Pippa POV

I hear the door to our bedroom open, and I turn my head, just as Lin walks out. He has a barely noticeable smile playing at his lips.

"What was that all about?" I ask curiously. I place a letter block down so the letter facing up is a 'K' and get up off of the carpet. I walk over to him and take both of his hands in mine.

"It was nothing, mi amor," He kisses my lips and I smile up at him with what I hope is a pleading look. "It was nothing," He repeats, more sternly.

"Okay..." I kiss him back quickly and spin around, walking towards the fridge. I open it, searching through it for something to eat. "Lin, we don't have any good food." I complain, closing the fridge door.

Lin walks over and puts his arms around my waist. "I'll run to the store and buy some things if you want," Lin turns me around so we're chest-to-chest. I smile at him, becoming slightly...uncomfortable? I keep staring into his dark eyes, trying not to break it, but instead, Lin breaks the stare by blinking and looking down at his feet.

"What?" I ask, lifting his chin. He doesn't look at me. "Lin, what?"

"It's nothing, Phillipa," He says, clearly annoyed.

"What did I tell you about calling me 'Phillipa'. You know I don't like it. Why can't you just tell me what's wrong?"

"Phillipa, it's nothing," He repeats, pulling away from me and walking into our bedroom. He slams the door with great force behind him, almost enough to knock the pictures off of the wall.

I glance at my mom in disbelief, and walk over to our bedroom door. I knock a few times, and when I get no response, I sigh and say, "Lin, I'm going to the store to buy food. Text me if you want anything special."

I get a hardly audible "Mhm." in response and grab my keys.

"Mom, I'll be back in a bit. Text me if you need anything. Oh and thanks for watching Sebastian," I offer a faint smile, and walk out of the door.

Lin POV

I hear Pippa mumble something to her mom, and then I hear the click of the apartment door shutting. I sigh, reaching into my pocket once again, and taking out my phone, I open Pippa's contact and start texting her.

Lin: Hey, can you pick up some milk and cheerios for Seb while you're out?

I send the text, getting a response only a moment later.

Pippa: Sure.

Lin: I'm sorry about what happened a few minutes ago Pip. You looked uncomfortable, and I didn't know how to react.

Pippa: It's fine. How about when I get home we cook dinner together and watch a movie or something?

Lin: Sounds great. Be careful, mi amor.

Although I'm still not convinced that Pippa is fine, I swipe out of the messaging app and click on safari. Time to find the perfect ring shop.

It takes me a little while to find a few nice stores for me and Chris to go to tomorrow, but while I scroll, I remember that I hadn't asked Pippa's mother if she was okay with letting us get married.

I open the bedroom door to discover Pippa's mom still playing with Sebastian on the carpet. I smile and walk over to them. My hands start to sweat, and I nervously clasp them together behind my back. "Mrs. Soo, can I talk to you about something?"

"Of course," She says, giving Sebastian his toy and standing up. "Oh, and you can call me Sheila," She adds.

I motion for her to sit with me at our small dining table and we sit across from each other. "I know it's only been a month or two since me and Phillipa have been dating, but-" I pause, thinking for a moment. "I really love her."

Sheila smiles at me, but I think she wants me to continue, so I do.

"She's the most amazing woman I've ever met. She's stunning! Her personality is everything, she has the most angelic voice that I get to hear just about every day. Did I mention she was beautiful?" I almost keep going, but I catch myself before I ramble even more. As much as I want to ramble even more, I know that I shouldn't. I don't want her mom to think I'm weird. "She's just...perfect. What I'm asking is: can I marry Pippa?"

This makes Sheila beam even more. "You know, Lin, you really are a nice man. I would never let anyone marry my daughter if they were dating for a few months," She pauses, and this makes me very anxious. Did she just say no? "But, I really, really, do like you, Lin. And, with that being said, I give you permission to marry Phillipa."

A huge grin spreads across both mine and Sheila's faces and I reach over to the table to shake her hand. "Thank you. Thank you so much."

Sebby comes over to me and pulls on my pant leg. He does this when he wants attention, and I think it's really cute.

"Seb, guess what?" I pick him up from the floor and sit him in my lap. "Papa gets to marry Mommy!" I hear Sheila let out a laugh from the table.

"Marry Mommy?" Sebastian asks, his little fingers playing with my sweatshirt pocket.

"Yes," I whisper. I bring his head closer to mine as tears start to sting my eyes. "I get to marry Mommy."

Lin POV

1 hour later..

"Hey, I'm back!" I hear Pippa yell from the entry of the apartment. I close the door to Sebastian's room slowly, as I had just put him down for his short nap before dinner.

"Hi, mi amor," I say, giving her a kiss and taking the plastic grocery bags from her hands. "How was the store?"

She smiles at me and places her purse on the granite counter, sitting at one of the stools at our small island. I place the bags on the counter, starting to take out everything she bought.

"It was good..." She trails off and looks at the ground. I look at her for a moment, and then she gets up, walking over to me, and places a hand on my chest. "I- um- I'm sorry about before, Lin. You shouldn't have apologized, I should have. I don't know what happened...I just...I don't know..."

All of a sudden, Pippa starts to break down in my arms, sobbing. "I'm sorry," She wails. "I'm sorry."

"Pips, what are you sorry about?" I ask, bring her closer to me while her head rests on my chest.

"It's...it's Steven."
