CHAPTER THIRTEEN

October Twenty-First

The Morning

Annabeth woke up naturally, sunlight streaming on her face. She was warm- warmer than usual. She moved to pull the blanket farther up on her shoulders but froze when her finger grazed a hand. Percy.

He still had his arms around her, more loosely now. Her head had come out from under his chin, their chests were together and Annabeth could feel Percy's rising and falling against her own. He was warm; she wanted to cuddle up against him more and more with every second that passed. She wrinkled her nose at the small bit of drool on the pillow next to him, but ultimately decided that it was cute. His eyelashes were long and they fluttered open. He caught her staring and smiled.

"Heyyy." He said. His voice was scratchy and deep. She placed her hands lightly on his chest as he pulled her back in, tightening his grip.

"Hi." She said, smally. She contemplated asking him what they were now. Talking? Dating? 'Together'? But she didn't want to get caught up in all of that. She just wanted to enjoy being with him. She lifted her head, giving him a soft, lingering kiss. "How did you sleep?" She asked, pushing some hair off of his forehead.

"Great." He said, stretching a bit. "But most importantly, how did you sleep?"

Annabeth smiled up at him. "Better than I have since I got here."

"So, we should probably talk about Luke." Percy said, furrowing his brow, awaiting her expression.

She nodded, in a similar, careful manner. "Yeah."

Percy tucked a gold lock behind her ear, resting his hand on her cheek. "How do you feel about trying to break up with him?"

She was surprisingly stunned. Even after all that had happened she was still... sad to have to let go of Luke. Not the new Luke, no. But the old one who truly was good. The hard part was, she didn't know where the old Luke had ended and the new Luke had begun.

"I want to," She swallowed thickly. The image of Luke first hitting her when he found out soccer was cancelled clouded her thoughts. "But I... I don't know how he will react."

Percy nodded. She could tell he was sad about her lingering feelings for Luke. But she didn't love Luke anymore. She loved him. Percy. She took his hand. "I want to be with you. Not him. It's just hard."

Percy nodded, watching her carefully. "That first time- when we swapped packages and you were crying- I heard him slap you."

Annabeth was stunned. What else had he heard? "You did?"

"Yeah and I've... I've basically been falling in love with your footsteps since."

Annabeth grinned, shifting to touch Percy's soft lips with her own. She spoke against his lips, sighing gently. "I'm going to break up with him today. I just- I'll have my friends wait outside the door."

Percy nodded. "You should probably go back up there. I can meet you in the stairwell afterwards?"

She reluctantly got out of bed, putting her hood and mask back on. She slipped out of the stairwell and back to her room. First she called Piper, asking her to her room. She would call Thalia afterwards. But Piper was always so good about love and that's what was on her mind the most at the moment. Moments after Piper knocked, coming in with two cups of coffee.

"Hey, what's up, Annabeth?"

Annabeth grinned, thinking about the events of the night before. Not the running from Luke, but Percy. Sleeping in Percy's bed and kissing Percy. "We kissed. Percy and I."

Piper nearly dropped her coffee. She hadn't left Annabeth alone about Percy since they'd talked on the phone in front of her. "You're kidding! Fuck, Annabeth. That's great. How? What about Luke?"

Annabeth ignored the last comment, she would bring that up later. She quickly delved into the events of the past weeks, starting with flirting on the phone, then meeting drunk in the stairwell and then kissing in his bed.
