Annabeth cried. She sat on Percy's bed, waiting for him to come home from school and cried. She knew it was stupid. But she also knew that she was right. Everyone she's ever loved has either died, or left. She loves Percy. She knew Percy wouldn't leave. But that's what she thought every time. How could she be sure? How could she know he, the one thing keeping her alive, wouldn't leave her like the rest and follow the pattern?
It was a consuming thought. Especially because Percy was her everything. Especially because Percy was different. She could bare the absence of Luke or Thalia or anyone else. But Percy was quite honestly the only thing keeping her from ending it all right now.
Annabeth knew she was being stupid, but again, it was consuming.
Percy finally opened the door. His face grew concerned when he noticed her. He softly shut the door behind him and placed his backpack on the chair, walking over to her.
"Hey, what's going on?"
Annabeth couldn't look at him. He was too good for her. He sat next to her and immediately enveloped her in a hug. She sobbed again, holding the person she was crying about. This was the hardest she'd cried in weeks. Annabeth hates crying. It was a sign of weakness and though she didn't hide anything from Percy, she still didn't like to do it. Most of her nightmares and flashbacks didn't include crying. Just violent shaking and hyperventilation. She had decided that crying was worse. Even though she lost control of her body during the flashbacks.
After a few minutes, Annabeth was able to steady her breathing but the thought still lingered. She hugged him closer. Percy pulled away and studied her face. He ran a finger across her cheek. "What's going on?"
"I- it's nothing."
He frowned. "I know it's not, 'Beth. You can tell me anything."
"You're going to leave me too. I know it."
"What?"
"Everyone leaves me." She blurted, talking fast. "You will too. And it'll be so unbearable I'll kill myself. And then I'll end up in the fields of punishment for-"
"Woah, hey, woah. Slow down." He hugged her again. "I'm not going anywhere. Ever. I promise, Annabeth."
She'd spent the last three hours trying to convince herself that he wouldn't. Coming from his own mouth, Annabeth still didn't believe it. She just shook her head as her eyes filled with tears again.
Percy pulled her down, opening the covers of the twin sized bed. She was wearing sweatpants and he had already changed. He hugged her close. Leaving just enough room for her to see his whole face. He searched her own.
Percys eyes always gave Annabeth a sense of calm. She steadied her breathing a synced her breaths to his heartbeat. Beating fast.
"Annabeth... Where are you getting all of this?" He asked.
She took a shuddering breath. "I know it's stupid. But I can't stop thinking about it."
"I'm not going anywhere. I love you okay? You don't leave someone who you love like this." He explained.
"Everyone leaves." She said, her voice cracking.
"Like who?"
"Luke."
Percy frowned. "Luke didn't leave because he didn't love you, Annabeth. He did, but he was insane. He wanted you to come with him. I'm not insane, Annabeth. I'm not going to leave you."
Annabeth shut her eyes, letting out a shuttering breath. "I've been told that before."
"Annabeth, I...." Percy took a breath. "I'm not someone else. I'm Percy. As in Annabeth and Percy, resident soulmates at camp. This is different. Theres something special about love like this. Because the love isn't a choice but the situation is. With Luke... you'd known him for so long and he was like your big brother, the only person who would look after you. You were stuck with him. You loved him. But you didn't choose to be around him, he was just always there. Your dad... you were forced to love him because he was your family. This love, Annabeth, is so strong because we both chose to be here, over and over until it wasn't a choice anymore, until the love was so strong that I can't breathe without you. And now you're stuck with me. I'm not leaving. This is different from the others."
Annabeth took her first clear breath. "Are you sure?"
Percy nodded. "One hundred percent. I love you. And I'll never be able to stop."
