Chapter 4: The Invite

Sunday....

It was a Sunday afternoon. It has been three days when I got fired from my job. I walked out of the cafe. I was heading home to rest. I got home and it was freezing. I decided not to turn the heater on. I didn't want to pay for the gas bill. I wouldn't be able to afford it. I went into my closet to take out my warmest jacket.

I walked to my laptop on my bed. I was looking for another job. I couldn't find any vet jobs in the area because my license got terminated. I talked to my manager at the cafe on Friday if I could work full time. She said that it would be fine. I now work from 7:00 am to 11:30 pm. I knew that the job would only be able to pay for my rent and bill and not the extra expenses.

I looked for jobs for the whole night. I couldn't find any. I decided to look up on the weather. It would be freezing for the whole week. I really wanted to turn the heater, but I wouldn't be able to afford the bill. Tonight, I decided to wear extra sweater and pants to stay warm.

Monday....2:00 am...

I felt really warm and sweaty. {Was I getting a fever?} I smelled smoke. I shot up from my bed and looked around. There was smoke everywhere. "What's...cough cough....going on...cough cough?" I said. The smoke was making me hard to breath. I walked to the door and opened it. I looked out the door to the hallway and saw fire at the end of the hallway.

I rushed back into my room and grabbed everything that was important. I grabbed my laptop, phone, birth certificate, social security card, passport, and my bag that had my wallet. I grabbed my box with the pendant and put it in my bag. I went out and saw that the fire was getting closer.

I rushed to the stairway at the other end of the building. I ran down the stairs as fast as I could. I made it out and saw that the fire trucks had arrived. I saw a crowd outside. I recognized some as my neighbors.

It was freezing cold outside. Even with all the layers, I was really cold. The snow made the cold worse.

2 hours later......

We found out that someone left wet clothes on the heater. My studio was burned by the fire. I had nothing important burned at least. Now, I had nowhere to go. I decided to go to a shelter until I could find a place to stay. I had the cafe to work for the time being.

I was about to leave the scene until I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and saw a man with silver grey hair. He had a suit on. {Isn't he cold. I'm freezing out here.} "May I help you?" I asked with my teeth chatter from the cold.

"Are you Beverly Melrone by any chance?" he asked. "Yes I am," I answered. "I am Mikhail. I am to escort you away from here. Please this way," he said. I wasn't so sure and confused as to why he asked me to follow him. I looked around. I didn't have a choice. I followed him to a car and we drove off.

After an hour drive, I started to see a fortress. "Where am I going?" I asked. "Prince Ivan instructed me to escort you to his home," he said. {Why would the prince want me at his home?} We stopped in front of the fortress. We got out of the car and made our way inside.

It was really warm inside. We continued to walk until we were in front of a door. He opened the door to reveal a room. It was beautiful. "This will be your room," Mikhail said. I was amazed by the size. I felt really small in the room. It had a desk, bed, nightstands, drawers, and a bathroom. "You should get cleaned up and rest. There are cloths in the drawers," he said. "Thank you," I said. He closed the door behind him.

I went to the drawers and picked out some undergarments that I thought would fit me and a nightdress. I went to the bathroom and took a quick shower. I quickly dried my hair and went to bed. I fell asleep quickly.

9:00 am....

I woke up from the light outside. I got out of bed and quickly brushed my teeth and hair. I looked through the drawers and found a sweater and some skinny warm pants to wear. I remembered something. I went to my bag and pulled out the box. I put it on my nightstand.

Knock.....Knock......

I walked over to the door and opened it. Mikhail was outside. "I am to escort you to Prince Ivan," he said. We walked through a hall. I saw painting on the wall. I found them fascinating. We stopped in front of a door. He opened the door and he let me walk in first. I nervously walked inside. I saw him at his desk working on something.

Prince Ivan looked up and set down his pen. "Leave us Mikhail," he said. Mikhail left us in the room. {Why am I here?} "Um...why am I here?" I asked nervously. He looked at me. He had his arms crossed. "After you treated Snieg, I went to look for you. I found Dr. Emich in your office throwing your things away. I asked where you were. He told me that he fired you because you didn't have the authorization to treat Snieg. I asked Mikhail to track you to be brought here so that I could thank you," he said.

"Your welcome, Your highness. Also, thank you for letting me stay here for the night," I said. He gave me a nod. "Follow me," he said. We exited his study and were in front of a door on the other side of the fortress. He opened the door. He let me inside first.
