Matthew’s P.O.V.

It’s been about an hour since Darsi ran away from me at the crow’s nest and I’m worried sick about her. What if I never get to see her again? What if I never get to tell her that I feel the same way? Oh gosh, this is all my fault! I run back up to the crow’s nest to go and think about where she might be and how I could find her.

When I get up there, I see Darsi asleep with the fifth episode from the second season of Doctor Who playing on her laptop. I breathe a sigh of relief knowing she’s safe. I go up to her, take the computer off of her lap and close it to turn it off. I start to head downstairs when I stop and look at her one more time. I don’t know what made me think to do this, but I walk over to her and plant a soft kiss on her forehead. “I love you, Darsi. I always have,” I whisper in her ear. I stand back up and walk toward the stairs. I wasn’t even two steps down when I hear a small voice come from behind me.

“Will you stay up here with me, Matty?” I freeze. I didn’t think she would’ve heard me at all! Well, I’m glad I already know that she feels the same way.

I softly chuckle and turn around saying, “I’ll do you one better. I’ll go get my pillows and blankets, and we can sleep on the floor up here, under the stars. Sound like a good plan?”

“I love it!” She replies with such enthusiasm. I rush down, grabbing my blankets and pillows, racing back up the stairs to an empty balcony.

“She stood me up! I can’t believe she would do that to me!” As soon as I say that, she comes back up the stairs in a long, black T shirt that reads, “Music is my life,” in white. My jaw practically hit the floor when I saw her in that.

“Don’t worry! I’m wearing shorts underneath it.” She reassures, helping me move the chairs to the side and lay out the blankets and pillows. As I lay down, she slowly follows me, almost like she’s scared to lay down.

“Are you okay, Darsi?”

“Yeah. I’m fine.” Her answer doesn’t reassure me at all, but I let it slide for tonight. She lays her head on my chest and I reach up to pet her soft brunette hair. I barely lay a hand on her, and she flinches into a ball, going tighter into it when I tap her to try and get her to unwrap herself

“Okay. What’s going on? Why are you so scared of me?” I ask with concern in my voice. She looks up at me, looking like she’s going to cry.

“Look… I really don’t want to talk about it anymore tonight. I promise I’ll stop flinching.”

“Okay,” I reply as she lays her head back down onto my chest, and I resume petting her hair. She still seemed like her guard was up a bit, so I started humming “God Bless the Broken Road,” to her, and soon, we both drift off into a deep sleep.
