Kara went to her first period classroom which regarded literature. She saw that her friends Karen Beecher and Zee Zatara were there, and she sat right next to them. "Hey Karen, hey Zee!" Kara said. "Hey Kara!" Karen replied enthusiastically. "How was your summer Kara?" Zee asked. "It was pretty awesome," said Kara, "what about you?"
As Karen and Zee talked about what they did on their summer vacation when they weren't hanging out with each other or fighting crime as their heroic alter egos, Kara noticed the mystery man walking her way. Kara's eyes widened and she blushed. If she was one of those Looney Tunes cartoon characters, cartoony hearts would be fluttering around. "Kara? Kara?" Zee asked, noticing that her friend had a dopey grin on her face. "Uh-oh... Not again..." Karen said, knowing what was going on. "Crush?" Zee nonchalantly asked in a whispering tone. "Mhmm." Karen nonchalantly replied while whispering, "I mean we've seen how an Amazon reacts when Diana developed a crush on Steve. But I don't think we've seen how a Kryptonian acts when having a crush." Kara glared and said, "you do realize that I have super hearing, right?" Zee raised her hands in a non-hostile manner and said, "you won't hear any judgment from us." The mystery man was organizing his journal. That's when the classroom's teacher, Mr. Dunder, walked in. "Good morning class," he nonchalantly said, "welcome to your first day of literature class. I'm your teacher, Mr. Dunder. Now we have a new student here in this class. I believe his name is Kevin Beaumont. Come on up and introduce yourself, Mr. Beaumont." The mystery man whom Kara was developing a crush on walked up to the front of the classroom, facing everyone. "So his name's Kevin..." Kara thought. Kevin cleared his throat and nonchalantly said, "uh, hi... Like Mr. Dunder said, I'm Kevin Beaumont. I'm not originally from Metropolis. I'm actually from Bellevue, Washington. I spent my adolescent and teen years in Gotham City. I, uh, like to cook, and my favorite sports are basketball and baseball. That's all I have to say, for now."
"Alright then, thank you for speaking up Mr. Beaumont," said Mr. Dunder, "you can sit back down. All of you will get to know each other as the year progresses." Kevin put his hands in his pockets and walked back to his desk, sitting back down. Mr. Dunder then went on about what was going to happen this year in literature class, one of the important themes being the tragic consequences of man playing God and that they would be reading stories like Frankenstein, HP Lovecraft's Herbert West: Re-Animator, and Jurassic Park. They would also be reading To Kill a Mockingbird this year. Kara rolled her eyes. She wasn't fond of that story, especially since it was her cousin's favorite story, and she resented him. The resentment was starting to diminish at least. "Your homework for today will be an essay about what your favorite book is," instructed Mr. Dunder, "please make sure it's an actual chapter book and not something childish like a picture book or a comic book. A novel based off of a movie franchise like Star Wars is at least acceptable. Nonfiction stories are acceptable as well. If you're going to write on paper, please make sure your handwriting is legible. Due tomorrow." Soon it was time to go to the next period, and everyone was leaving. As soon as Kevin stood up, Kara said, "I'm Kara Danvers, by the way!" She offered her hand, trying to hide her blush. Zee gave an "ahem," and Kara said, "and these are my friends Karen Beecher and Zee Zatara." Kevin shook Kara's hand along with the hands of her other friends and said, "nice to meet you Kara. And it's nice to meet your friends Karen and Zee." As he shook their hands Kevin continued, "sorry I didn't throw my name earlier when we were at our lockers." Kara giggled, "oh it's no problem..." Zee whispered to Karen, "at least he's nice. I can see why Kara thinks he's so handsome." Kevin looked at his schedule and said, "well, time for me to go to Geometry. See you ladies around." Kevin then left the classroom to go to his next classroom. "I must say, you certainly have good taste in men, Kara." Zee commented. "You think I should talk to Diana about what it's like to have a crush?" Kara shyly asked. Karen shrugged and said, "probably."
