We arrived at our class room and I took a seat next to Hermione on the right side of the class while the boys took their seats in the middle of the room. There were large arched windows on the left side of the room and one at the front of the class with a small set of stairs leading to the teachers office. At the front of the class there was a chalkboard with a small wooden desk to the right of it, the desk had glass containers filled with bees and a small metal jar which had worms wriggling around in. Hung from the ceiling was dozens of round glass panes with metal decorating the circumference, they were all sorts of sizes ranging from ones as small as a crystal ball and ones as big as a hula hoop.

As the rest of the students took their seats our teacher came down from his office. He was an averaged size man with thin, shaggy ginger hair that seemed to be going grey. His face had scars scattered from his cheeks to his chin and he had an electric blue 'magic' eye strapped to his face that scanned the room vigorously. He wore a tatty brown trench coat that ended just above his ankles.

"Alastor Moody" he spoke in a growling Scottish accent as he turned around and proceeded to write his name on the board. "Ex auror, ministry malcontent and your new defence against the dark arts teacher." he said as he turned around to face the class, his eye examining each student. "I am here because Dumbledore asked me, end of story, goodbye, the end. Any questions?" The class fell silent and just stared at him in bewilderment.

"When it comes to the dark arts, I believe in a practical approach. But first which of you can tell me, how many unforgivable curses there are?" he asked as he stepped back towards the chalkboard and my eyes widened at the mere mention of the curses. "there are three sir!" Hermione piped up, "and they are so named?" he added to his previous question. "Because they are unforgivable." she continued "The use of any one of them will-" "earn you a one-way ticket to Azkaban, correct!" the professor interjected, "now the ministry says that you are too young to see what these curses do. I SAY DIFFERENT! YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP AGAINST! YOU NEED TO BE PREPARED! YOU NEED TO FIND ANOTHER PLACE TO PUT YOUR CHEWING GUM BESIDES THE UNDERSIDE OF YOUR DESK MR FINNIGAN!" he yelled across the classroom as Seamus whispered "oh, no way. The old codger can see out the back of his head!". The professor spun around and hurled a piece of chalk at Seamus before shouting "AND HEAR ACROSS CLASSROOMS!".

We all sat in shock at what just happened, the professors demeanour changed as he walked down the aisle in-between the tables, "so, which curse shall we see first? WEASLEY!" "yes." Ron said quite panicked, "stand!" the professor demanded and Ron pushed himself up from his chair reluctantly. "Give us a curse." "well, my dad did tell me about one. The Imperious curse." Ron said timidly, "oh yeah, your father would know about that. It gave the ministry quite a bit of grief a few years ago. Perhaps this will show you why." he growled as he hobbled to the front of the class.

As he walked away from Ron all I could think about was how my step-father used the same curse on me and how he made me bend to his will.

He opened a glass jar and lowered his hand in to let a small whip spider crawl onto his hand, "hello" he said making the 'o' a higher pitch, "ugly little beauty." "Engorgio... Imperio!" and with a wave of his wand the spider was jumping from table to table, students shifting in their seats to make even the smallest bit of distance between the spider and themselves. "Don't worry she's completely harmless." he joked as the spider went from Crabbes head to one Gryffindor girls arm, "if she bites, she's lethal!" he stated as he made the spider hover over Rons head, his face scrunched up in fear, then in shock as the professor dropped the poor creature on his forehead laughing manically. "what are you laughing at!" he snapped his head at a giggling Draco. He placed the spider on his nose and the blonde boy began panicking "get it off!" he whimpered and turned to Goyle who was attempting to swat it off him without actually hitting Draco. "talented isn't she. What should I have her do next? Jump out the window?" he hit the spider against one of the glass panes, "Drown herself?" he then hovered her above a bucket of water, the poor creature squirming as her legs grazed the surface of the water.

Moody then moved her with his wand back to the palm of his hand, "scores of witches and wizards have claimed that they only did you-know-whos bidding under the influence of the Imperious curse! But here's the rub, how do we sort out the liars?" he said in a raspy voice.

"Another! Another! Up, up, come on." everyone raised their hands but started to lower them when Moody addressed a Gryffindor boy at the front, "Longbottom is it? Up. Professor Sprout tells me you have an aptitude for herbology." he added. "There's the, erm, the Cruciatus curse." the shy boy stuttered, "Correct! Correct! Come, come. Particularly nasty." he said starting off in a booming voice that gradually got quieter with every word.

They both stood in front of the wooden desk that was located at the front of the classroom, "the torture curse" Moody mumbled followed by a loud "Crucio!". The spider started squealing and writhing in pain.

I gasped but quickly put my hand over my mouth to suppress the sob that came from my mouth. I snapped my head away from the current event which is happening at the front of the class. All that was going through my mind was what happened only a few nights ago. Tears started to run down my cheek and my hand still covered my mouth to stop the noise as I wept.

I didn't think anyone noticed until I heard Hermione yell "stop it! Can't you see it's bothering them! Stop it!" she said to the professor who looked up at the brown-haired boy then to her. He followed her gaze to look at me, tears still streaming down my face.

He stopped the spell walked over to our table as I wiped my cheeks. He stopped next to Hermione and placed the creature on top of her book, "perhaps you could give us the last unforgivable curse miss Granger?" he asked in a low voice. She shook her head as her lips twitched and her eyes looked away from him.

"well..." he mumbled, "Avada Kerdarva!" he spat as a green light shot from the end of his wand and hit the spider making it curl up its legs and go stiff. "The killing curse. Only one person has known to survived it and he's sitting in this room." he told the class as he walked over to Harry.

Harry looked up at him slowly, as he did the professor reached for a flask from his pocket and took a swig of whatever liquid was inside and walked away.

"Class dismissed!" he yelled. I scrambled to get all my things into my bag and ran out the classroom, ignoring whoever was shouting for me.
