A/N: in my story Merope Riddle didn't die after giving birth to Tom Riddle. Just a heads up 😊

31st December 1926, Wool's orphanage, London.

A heavily pregnant woman staggered through the doors of the orphanage, obviously in labour. The woman was hunched over groaning in pain with tears running down her pale, heavy face. Her hair was ratty and dull. She wore a ragged grey dress which was wet from her water breaking not too long ago and the heavy snowfall outside.

Three women helped the poor girl through the black and white tiled halls of the orphanage to a small room with a single bed pushed against the small square window. "what's your name my dear?" a young woman asked while she helped the pregnant woman onto the bed. "Merope!" the pregnant woman screamed her name as a contraction came.

An hour later Merope gave birth to a baby boy. "what are you going to call him?" the kind young woman asked as she handed the baby over to the exhausted Merope. "Tom Marvolo Riddle. After his father and grandfather." she spoke wearily looking down on her new born. That's when she noticed. Her baby had his father's eyes and dark hair, even though the child barely had hair, she noticed.

She let out a small sob as she recalled how the child's father had abandoned her in the streets of London after she released him from a love potion, she had been giving him for around a year. She remembered how she thought that once she had released him, he would have truly fallen in love with her but that wasn't the case.

Later that night she fled the orphanage, leaving the newborn Tom Riddle behind.

20 years later

Merope had changed her name back to Gaunt sometime after leaving Tom at Wool's orphanage.

She had also met a pureblood wizard in a brothel she was working at. With finding out the customer was a pureblood wizard she saw an opportunity to carry on the Gaunt name and its pureblood heritage. So, she decided to take him on as a customer and sleep with him, without him knowing her plan on getting pregnant.

A year later she gave birth to another baby boy in the brothel she had worked at, whom she named Alaric Gaunt. Unfortunately, she died only a few hours after naming her new born son.

The woman who owned the brothel took it upon herself to raise the child as her own, as she could not have any children of her own.

Alaric's background

The woman who adopted Alaric had left the brothel to one of her workers and moved into a small cottage north of a large village called Staplehurst. Alaric grew up to become a handsome young man with light brown hair which had a slight curl to it and piercing blue eyes.

By the age of eleven he had received his acceptance letter to Hogwarts and started his education at the school in 1957. He got sorted into Slytherin house and this is where he met a beautiful pureblood witch called Aurora y/l/n. She had deep blue eyes like the ocean and thick honey blonde hair that trailed down her back, stopping just above her thighs.

Alaric and Aurora had gotten closer through their years at Hogwarts and started a relationship in their final year at the school. A few years after they graduated from Hogwarts, they both got jobs at the ministry to help in the capture of a new wizarding world threat known as Lord Voldemort, which Alaric later found out to be his half-brother and unbeknownst to Alaric he was his first target.

In 1979 Aurora had got pregnant with Alarics baby. They were thrilled to have the opportunity of bringing another life into the world, so Alaric proposed to Aurora hoping to marry her after their child was born.

Six months into the pregnancy Voldemort had found out about his half-brother Alaric and wanted revenge for taking his mother away from him when he was born, even though it was Merope's choice to leave him at the orphanage and the fact he wasn't born for another twenty years made Voldemort's revenge scheme seem pointless. Voldemort had blamed his muggle father and Alaric for causing his mother to leave. Although he was half right when it came to his father.

Voldemort's followers had found where Alaric and Aurora were living and told their leader. The dark lord decided to pay them a visit and to confront Alaric about their mother with malevolent intentions.

The day of reckoning

There was a thick layer of black cloud covering the night sky. The howling wind rattled the windows of Alaric and Auroras quaint house. The lights went out and Alaric went into the kitchen to get some candles to light the living room.

Suddenly, the front door was ripped off its hinges and a cloaked figure prowled into the living room where Aurora was cowering behind the sofa. Alaric ran back into the room and stood heroically in front of Aurora to protect her from the cloaked figure.

Alaric pulled his wand out of his pocket but the figure disarmed him in an instant. "Who are you? What do you want from us?" the brave man yelled as he stood his ground. "Oh, I think you already know that don't you!" the cloaked figure hissed as it removed its hood to show none other than Lord Voldemort standing with his wand pointed at Alaric.

"You!" he gasped looking the dark lord square in the eyes. "What do you want?" he added. "You know what I am to you, yes?" Alaric nodded in response to his brother's question, "then you know what I am here to do!" Voldemort said with an evil smirk. "No, I-" Alaric began but it was too late. A green flash of light came out of the dark lord's wand and hit him straight in the chest, making Alaric collapse to the floor.

Aurora screamed at the sight of Alarics corpse lying on the ground in front of her and fell to her knees. Tears streaming down her face uncontrollably. She pulled her fiancé onto her lap, stroking his face with her shaking hands.

Voldemort strode towards her and placed his hand on her shoulder making her flinch at his touch. "You and your daughter will be better off without him." he leant down and whispered into her ear. Then with one swift motion he apparated away.

Aurora still on her knees sobbing, moved her hand from Alarics face onto her stomach.

"Daughter?"

A/N: This is my first time writing a backstory so please don't judge me too harshly and I hope you're enjoying the story so far 😊
