CHAPTER ONE: School & Secrets

"Evie."

"Eeeeeeevie."

"Oh EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVIE!"

"Evie!"

"EARTH TO EVIE!"

Evelyn jumped, glancing around in confusion. "Wha-"

"You were in one of you daydreams again." The girl beside her grinned and brushed her frizzy brown curls away from her face. "What was it this time? Flying pandas?"

"No." Evelyn flushed as red as her hair. "Just- a cat."

The girl giggled. "Sure it was just a cat. Did it have a superhero cape?"

"No."

"A sword?"

"Nope."

"Fully dressed in a princess crown and dress?"

"Uh, definite no on that one."

"Definitely yes then." The girl smiled, pleased with herself, as Evelyn seethed.

"Kayleigh," Evelyn almost hissed. "NO!"

"Ha." Kayleigh danced to her feet, stooping to pick up her lunch tray. "Yes yes yes-"

"No no no-" Evelyn retaliated almost as quickly, grabbing her own tray and standing. "Absolutely never-"

Not ever ever ever ever ever ever ever!

Evelyn flinched as the voice echoed through her mind, full of the childish innocence. Kayleigh noted her sudden change in expression and instantly backed off. "I'm sorry, I-"

"No, it's not you. It's nothing."

Kayleigh didn't look like she believed her.

"It's nothing!" Evelyn insisted more forcefully, but her eyes darted to the school lunch tray in her arms rather than Kayleigh's face. When her burger stopped being interesting, she switched to staring at an old piece of chewing gum molded to the underside of the table. "It's the cat. The cat in a superhero cape."

Kayleigh smiled uncertainly. "I think you mean the princess crown."

"I think I don't." Said Evelyn, slipping back into their ordinary, comforting banter as she began to walk towards the cafeteria's trash cans. She took another bite of burger- the grease seeping through the thin paper wrapping and coating her fingers- before she dumped the remains of her lunch into the blue bin declaring trash! A quick glance at the recycle! bin, colored green, showed that just as many students had left their food remains and plastic there rather than the correct space. Kids could be stupid sometimes. "Probably because-oh yeah- it's you who has those fantasies."

Quickly pacing forwards, Kayleigh followed Evelyn's lead- pretending it never happened as she too threw her lunch away. "I'm offended you'd think so." Kayleigh said, putting her hand to her mouth mockingly. "I never have any thoughts about anything other than perfectly sensible things."

"As if." Evelyn laughed and moved to place her tray in the messy stack on the cafeteria's counter.

"No kittens in tutus for you, then?" Kayleigh pretended to be disappointed.

Evelyn smirked. "Not that you can prove."

Kayleigh rolled her eyes. "You don't know what I can find out when I put my mind to it." The innocent comment had them both stiffening. "That's not what I meant." Kayleigh said weakly. "I never-"
