Chapter 8

Fate is driving her insane. The more she tries to avoid the Emperor, the more it makes a way for them to cross paths. She was lucky; it has been a week since the last time she saw him. Their last meeting was not good; they never had a good meeting, though. He always bullies her as if his life depends on it. He washed the animals he hunted in the river, staining her clothes with blood. It was disgusting and dirty; she really hates blood.

Since then, she has become anxious about her surroundings. She makes sure there's no emperor around to play with her. And it looks like the Emperor has gone busy as well. As far as she remembers, he has an upcoming duel. Perhaps he's preparing for it. But why is it not being announced? Does the Emperor want it to be a secret? Or will the announcement be late enough to surprise everyone? Nevertheless, it's not her business anymore, and she should not think of anything that's related to him.

It's evening already. They just arrived from the town center. The packages arrived late, making them work overtime. The other servants were heading to their huts; they were expecting to wrap it up early tomorrow because it's very late and they're all tired. She was about to follow everyone when the head servant called them.

"The Emperor has asked to wrap up everything even if it's late," the head servant announced.

The servants murmured in frustration. They're all really tired, but it's the Emperor's command. They should obey no matter what. So everyone went back to pick up the packages and bring them to their designated places. The goods to the kitchen, more other stuff, and the boxes of liquor. She made sure to pick the goods that would be delivered to the kitchen to avoid the liquor, but their Chief did not let it happen.

"Raph, bring the liquor to the—"

She immediately turned around and raised the box of goods. "Please, not me."

The Chief frowned. "Boy, what?"

She nervously signed. Everything just makes her nervous. She finds it hard to communicate. "I'm begging you. I'll work overtime in compensation. But please don't make me bring those liquors to the Emperor again."

"Why?" The chief asked, not satisfied.

She sighed. It looks like she's not going to win this argument. "Just because."

"Tell me why. Give me a good reason, the chief insisted.

She can't just tell him because the Emperor's bullying her. He'll probably ask why. And what would she say? The Emperor is bugging her because he knows something about her that everyone should not know. Oh, she's digging her own grave.

She just sighed. "I'm scared, and it's dark already."

The chief scoffed. He totally did not like her answer. "We're all scared! You're not an exemption."

"Please..." She begged, her eyes asking for a chance to be heard.

The chief turned his back and faced the other servants. "Go before I fire you," he said.

"Please..." She tried so hard to beg.

But the chief got mad instead. "Do I need to repeat everything for you? Or do you want to pack your bags now?"

She sighed in sadness. Of course, they won't listen. They'll never listen. She won't be heard; that won't happen. She should not have her hopes up; she'll just be disappointed. The chief knows she delivers liquor to the Emperor's room; he trusts her already. And she was doing fine before—not until the Emperor started bugging her. Everything went wrong.

She put the box of goods down and picked up the box of liquor. With a heavy heart, she started walking down the dark hallway to the Emperor's room. There's no moon; good thing the hall is bright, as the beautiful lamp posts were hanging everywhere, giving light to the corridor. She stopped at the Emperor's door when a sentry called.

"Hey boy, what's that?" The sentry asked.

She signed and tried to give the box: "Liquor delivery for the emperor. Can you please hand it over to him?" She tried to convey this by repeatedly giving him the box. "Please?"

The sentry did not bother. She sighed. Either he did not understand her or he didn't want to go inside. She has no choice but to step into the room of her nightmares. It looks like she won't be able to sleep properly tonight. The Emperor's face will haunt her in her dreams.

She made sure not to make any sounds. When she walked inside, the lights were already off. She did not do anything but put the box down and silently walk away. The Emperor seemed to be resting on the bed now. That's good; she could just sneak out easily. That's what, at least, she thought. But she was surprised when she bumped into someone while trying to sneak outside.

"What are you doing here, Kitten?" A baritone voice said, and her world began shaking non-stop. Her tiredness and fear came all at once, making her collapse in his arms. She was about to fall, but the Emperor caught her. She immediately stood up and pulled away.

She bowed. "Your majesty, I'm here to bring you the liquor."

"Just like the last time, huh?" The Emperor said. It was dark, but she could feel the smirk on his face based on his voice.

She signed once again. "Allow me to leave."

The Emperor yanked her. "No." He went to the door and locked it up. She shivered. What did he do? Why did he lock the door? Is she going to die? She had heard before that no one comes out alive from his room; she was just lucky because he was drunk. Oh gosh, she might die! She's not ready yet.

Her eyes began watering. She tried so hard not to cry. If she cries, the Emperor will be happy again. He wants to see her suffering, so if she shows him her weakness, he'll be satisfied. She has to be strong.

"Stand here until I tell you to leave, he said, walking into his bed and making her freeze on her spot, dumbfounded.

What did he say? She's so confused. Why? She doesn't understand anything. What's going on? Why is the Emperor doing this? She has a lot going on in her mind; questions keep popping up from time to time, but she remained silent and just stood frozen on her spot, just as he said. Time passed so fast that the room became awkwardly quiet. It seemed like the Emperor had fallen asleep already, and she was still standing.

Her knees are starting to shake. She's really tired for the day; she might not make it. She's feeling dizzy as well. She worked all day; she can't stay up all night. She might collapse. She wants to sneak out. But how is she going to leave when the Emperor has locked the door and slept already? Gosh, he's really making her life miserable. What did she even do?

Her feet are hurting already. She's been standing for hours now. Her eyes were closing as well. She really can't stay up; she needs to rest now! She tried so hard to make a sound, hoping that the Emperor would notice her.

"Uhum," she coughed. "Am I allowed to leave now?" She signed, hoping the Emperor would respond. She doesn't know if he's asleep or awake; she just signed out of desperation.

"No," the Emperor answered. She heard the answer she didn't want to hear. She had no choice but to keep standing on her post.

Hours had passed already. The room was so quiet that the only sound she could hear was the wind whooshing from the outside. Everything else in the room is killing her. She really wants to leave now; she needs rest. Her body is aching, her feet are shaking, and she's really tried.

"Emperor," she desperately called. "Your majesty, how about now? Please allow me to leave."

"No," the Emperor responded once again. "Unless I tell you to do so, you're not allowed to do anything." He said, making her silently cry. Is he awake all the time? Or he's just too sensitive; he wakes up from the littlest thing?

Her body began shaking. Her tiredness came all at once, making her vision blurry. Oh no, her eyes are closing. Her breathing is becoming erratic as well. She can't do it anymore. May the Emperor forgive her, but she can't control her body anymore.

"I'm sorry..." She said before everything turned black.
