Kay's POV

I sit next to Cole and he immediately spots the blood stains on my sleeves.

"Kay, promise me you will stop, it's not good." He says simply although his voice is laced with his plea.

"I can't promise you that Cole."

"Why not?" He almost begs.

I then say what I said to Gale, I cringe waiting to see his hurt reaction. I had said that I love him but I love Gale too, and his face suddenly fell. Now I wait for his reaction after I have finished.

"I kinda guessed you might like Gale after- wait, you love me?" He replies cutting himself short.

"Of course I do, I've only been trying to protect you. Why else would I do that?" I ask as if it were obvious.

"Kay you don't have to protect me like you do, pushing me away just makes me feel worse. I used to be a nobody, and get bullied, but then I became popular, and I thought everything would be alright after that, but it wasn't. I felt like a piece of me was missing, I conformed to be like everyone else, at the cost of losing myself. Until I met you I had ignored it. But ever since we started hanging out I felt complete again. And, when you broke up with me, I felt a bigger part missing, because without you I'm not whole, without you I'm not me." He says, his voice filled with all the love he has for me.

"Cole Jackson, detention, I will see you after school." Says Mr.Rudy. During his little speech to me, Mr.Rudy had called out Cole for talking, but he continued so he could finish, so feeling like it was my fault I decided to do something.

"Well that's stupid." I say trying to sound confident although I am terrified bringing attention upon myself.

"Well Ms.Wes, please elaborate as to why my decision was so 'stupid'." He replies.

"Easy, I was upset and Cole was comforting me, aren't teachers supposed to encourage behavior like that? Helping out another classmate?" I say hoping my voice isn't as shaky as I feel.

"Not when it interrupts class, multiple times." He says starting to get mad.

"Whatever you say, but it's still not right." I say defiantly, waiting for him to give me detention.

"That's it Ms.Wes detention, after school, and if you are so much as a second late, it'll be a week." He says harshly. I just shrug.

Then I think to what might happen if my dad finds out. And I realize I must be shaking, because Cole puts his arm around me and whispers it's all right.

At the end of class Cole again asked me to promise not to cut, but not wanting to lie I just ignored the question.

Cole's POV

I suddenly realize why Kay was shaking at school as I get home. As I start out the door my dad yells at me.

"Where are you going? You have practice. Come back or your grounded." He yells, but I keep going, knowing that I need to save Kay.

I bolt to her house and get there in minutes. My fist never touches the door as I do not knock, I just walk in. And only to see his arm raised and ready to swing that belt.

I run in front of Kay as he strikes down, the blow landing on my arm instead of on Kay. She runs upstairs, ignoring the loud, and raging protests from her dad, and I follow her.

I reach her room only to see her about to place the blade on her skin. Then I reach out once I am near and grab it, feeling the cold metal pierce my skin as I grabbed it badly. I immediately drop it, only to bend and pick it up once more to ensure Kay doesn't get it.

"You shouldn't have done that." She says lifting the back of her shirt, showing many marks. "He was almost done, now I will get more."

"I stopped you from cutting and I am staying so he can't touch you. I'd say your good for now." I say.

Kay's POV

That's when I see his hand, the blood rushing down it.

"I'm so sorry I didn't mean to cut you."

"No you meant to cut yourself, and if I get hurt preventing that it's okay, as long as you're okay." he replies.

I take a wash cloth and clean his hand then place a paper towel in his hand to soak up any remaining blood. It's late and I climb into bed, Cole tries to say he will sleep on the floor.

"No, come here," I say and he walks over to sit on the bed. I pat it once and he lays down, staying near the edge to give me space. I grab his arm and wrap it around my waist, leaving him no choice, but to cuddle up next to me. "Better." I say. And he smiles.
