﹉﹉﹉﹉﹉﹉﹉﹉THE STORY OF HOW
CHOI YEONJUN HAD
FOUND CHOI SOOBIN,
HUENING KAI, AND
CHOI HYUNSUK
ANNOYING.✦┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈✧
IT'S an extremely hot day. eight year old choi yeonjun walks out the ice cream parlor right in between his parents, an ice cream cone filled with strawberry and vanilla ice cream clutched in his right hand. he licks away at the ice cream, humming happily to himself as he and his parents walk back to the apartment complex.
the sun starts to set, and the sky begins to look like a mixture of pink and orange and red hues. the colors remind yeonjun of the skin on a peach. he thinks the sky looks rather pretty right at that moment.
his parents go into the apartment complex as yeonjun stays behind to finish his ice cream on a bench after telling them he'd stay out for a little while longer. they were reluctant at first, but decided to trust their son while muttering something along the lines of asking jieun's parents if she could come out and keep yeonjun company while entering the building.
yeonjun swings his feet happily while he basks himself in the sun's remaining rays. he hears loud footsteps clacking against the sidewalk, but yeonjun ignores the sound, choosing to close his eyes while he eats his ice cream.
it all happened too fast.
he didn't get to register a body slamming into his own as his attention immediately focuses on the cold feeling on his leg. yeonjun's eyes flutter open and land down and his ice cream cone in all it's broken glory. the ice cream is on his right leg.
yeonjun looks up to see a younger kid—choi soobin is his name. soobin starts apologizing profusely, bowing his head and refusing to meet eyes with the older boy.
yeonjun stares at soobin with narrowed eyes. he opens his mouth to say something when a voice cuts him.
"oh soobin, it was an accident, okay? no need to worry about it too much," says jieun, smiling at the seven year old whose eyes are brimming with tears that threaten to spill out at any given second. the boy smiles brightly, thanking her before whipping his head around towards the entrance of the apartment complex—soobin's parents were beckoning for the boy to head back inside for dinner.
"bye big sis jieun! bye big bro yeonjun!" soobin waves at both of them before he disappears into the building.
jieun chuckles and turns her head towards her best friend upon hearing him huff. yeonjun has a pout on his lips, his eyebrows furrowed as he stares at the ground, kicking at it.
"yeonjun, don't act like a brat," the girl says, hitting his arm softly before taking a seat next to yeonjun.
they sit in what jieun believes is comfortable silence accompanied with yeonjun's huffs of annoyance every once in a while. the girl lets out a small sigh before standing up and looms over yeonjun, offering her hand to him.
"we should get going," the girl says, "your mom asked me to come get you for dinner."
yeonjun lets out another small huff and grabs her hand; jieun hoists him up from the chair, and they begin to walk towards the apartment complex. that's when another small boy, younger than both of them by three years, rams into yeonjun, sending both of them tumbling onto the ground.
the two boys groan out in pain, except for the younger one who begins to sniffle. yeonjun rolls his eyes out of annoyance, and smugly smiles to himself when he sees jieun kneel down, taking out a band-aid from the pockets of her pants—she always liked to carry a couple band-aids in fear she or yeonjun could get injured.
his brown eyes widen in shock when jieun shuffles over to the crying boy, comforting him.
"there there, hyuka," jieun says, patting his head. "it's all right... is it alright if i look at your knee?"
huening kai nods, sniffling. jieun smiles at him and takes a look at the scrape he has on his knee before plastering the band-aid on.
"there you go!" she grins, "it'll heal in no time, okay? do you need any help getting back inside?"
the younger boy thinks silently for a couple seconds when his older sister comes to get him. she scolds him gently, apologizing to a baffled yeonjun and an easy-going jieun. when they disappear into the building, yeonjun snaps out of his daze and flicks the side of jieun's head. she yelps out in surprise, staring at him with wide eyes.
"what was that for?"
yeonjun mimics her, tilting his head left and right. "that's what you get for not caring about me first!"
jieun rolls her eyes, and gets up from the ground. "you're being a baby, jun. now get up, our parents are waiting for us."
yeonjun huffs before pointing at his own scraped knee. "do you... have another band-aid?"
jieun snorts and rolls her eyes. she stuffs her hand into her pocket before slowly looking at yeonjun, wearing a guilty look on her face. "i am so sorry, jun... i don't have anymore band-aids..."
the boy sighs. "it's fine. just help me up."
jieun nods quietly and helps him up, making sure he's alright before they both walk into the apartment building.
upon them entering the apartment complex, a boy their age, choi hyunsuk, comes running down the stairs as jieun and yeonjun begin to ascend them. they don't know why, but hyunsuk ends up screaming something about an ugly monster and runs up the stairs again.
jieun looks up as hyunsuk's retreating form as yeonjun balls his fist.
"i hate people," he mummers.
though he specifically meant to say that he hates choi soobin, huening kai, and choi hyunsuk.
