IN WHICH THEY
BOTH MAKE IT.

✦┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈✧

YEONJUN jolts awake, breathing heavily. he looks around in the darkness of the room, reaching out and grabbing his phone. he shakily unlocks it and goes to his messages, tapping on jieun's name.

yeonjun
i'm not quite sure what you mean by that ji. but i wanted to tell you that i've had hanahaki since last month ever since we saw your friend, beomgyu, with haein that night after i picked you up from work. i confessed today and got rejected lmao. i made up my mind just now to get the surgery, so i won't be able to talk for a bit. i'll see you when i come back from the surgery, ji :)
MESSAGE UNABLE TO BE DELIVERED !

he sighs, placing his phone back down. "who am i kidding," he laughs, running a hand through his hair. "stop thinking it's a dream, yeonjun." yeonjun feels something wet land on his hand. he looks down, watching as teardrops fall on his hands.

"why am i crying..." yeonjun says, shakily laughing. "i've... i've already come to terms with it... so why am i... crying...?"

yes, he likes to think that he's come to terms with jieun forgetting about him. yes, he likes to think that it's fine that jieun forgot about him.

"i really... i can't let go still."

yeonjun glances to his right. his eyes widen in panic, and he jumps out of his bed. he runs to the door, slipping his shoes on and grabbing the doorknob. he twists it open and is face-to-face with jieun, who stares at him with wide eyes.

"you—why are you out so late?"

jieun looks at yeonjun. "i'm sorry...?" she says. jieun slips past yeonjun, ducking underneath his arm, kicking her shoes off by the door and heading straight towards her bed. yeonjun watches her and notices the goofy smile plastered on her lips.

"did something good happen?" yeonjun asks.

jieun sits up, nodding. yeonjun notices how the light from the hallways reflects brightly in jieun's brown eyes.

"i know we're not close or anything," jieun says, "but i can't tell my little brother right now. he's sleeping, so i'll tell you because i can't keep it in."

yeonjun tilts his head in confusion.

"choi beomgyu likes me," jieun grins, her cheeks and ears tinted a bright pink color. "i'm his girlfriend now."

"you may now kiss the bride."

yeonjun smiles sadly as he sees beomgyu and jieun grin at each other with flushed cheeks. beomgyu swoops down, holding jieun close to him as he places his lips on hers, kissing her. everyone claps and cheers for the newly wed couple, happy for their marriage.

jieun and beomgyu smile at each other, and yeonjun can tell that they're in their own little world right now with how they just keep looking at each other, beaming.

they all head to the reception where everyone goes to their seats, sitting down as they all watch beomgyu and jieun take their seats in the center, their parents sitting alongside them.

yeonjun gazes at them, sad yet happy for jieun. he could've been the one at the alter next to jieun right now. he looks away with a sad smile.

"hi yeonjun."

yeonjun looks up and sees taehyun standing in front of him.

"hi."

taehyun sighs. "i'm really surprised you and my sister managed to become friends again."

the older male chuckles. "i'm surprised about it, too. you can imagine the initial shock i felt when i realized i was the reason why ji had to get the surgery."

"she had to," says taehyun. "i wasn't going to let her die because of you."

"and i'm thankful for that," replies yeonjun, staring down at his hands. "i wouldn't have been able to live with myself if she hadn't come back from the surgery while i did. if losing my friendship with her means that she would get to live... i'd hand it over with a bow on top. jieun has such a bright future. she can't lose everything the future holds for her because of me."

taehyun smiles. "i'm glad you realized that, yeonjun. my sister... really is better off without you."

yeonjun nods, his gaze falling to the ground. "she really is."

"however, you were an important part of her life and mine as well. so, i am glad that you guys were able to become friends again... but your friendship with her isn't what it used to be, which is good." taehyun glances at beomgyu and jieun, smiling at the sight of them. "because there was a better person out there for ji all along. she wouldn't have found the true love of her life if she kept loving you like a fool."

sighing, taehyun pats yeonjun's shoulder. "i'll get going now, yeonjun. i hope you find happiness soon... though i honestly think you kind of don't deserve it for putting my sister through all that pain."

yeonjun looks up. taehyun goes back to jieun and beomgyu, talking and laughing with them. his smile wavers.

he likes to think that loving jieun now, after her forgetting all about him prior to the surgery, is karma for having fallen in love with someone else that wasn't her. he likes to think that as long as she's happy, that's all he needs to be happy as well.

now, yeonjun is the foolish moth that's dangerously attracted to the bright and blinding light that he will never be able to have.
