Chapter Three: The Ambush

Just a small reminder there is going to be a little bit of tragedy in this chapter.

In order to return back to the kingdom of Verillia Katherine and the rest of the guards accompanying her would have to go through a different route than before. This route in particular was very closed off and unnecessarily narrow, surrounded by huge dark trees leading to a forest. They started on their way, the night was setting now making everything harder to see. " It's  better if you stay in the carriage, in case bandits are near" Noah warned her in the tone that always made her feel safe. However Katherine's nerves were feeling too agitated to be calmed so easily.

" I would rather be on my horse and stay alert, she responded. As you wish my lady he responded the professional tone a knight would. This wouldn't have bothered Katherine if it had been anyone else but she had known Noah since he was a child and she wouldn't admit it to anyone but she cared for him a lot causing it hurt a bit. "Hey" She said making an attempt to start conversation but the next thing she knew an arrow came out of nowhere piercing the guard just a few inches to the right behind her. Blood started poring out from the wound of the guard and then from his mouth before he collapsed to the ground. 

" It's an attack !" Noah yelled he was the one leading the knights in this trip. The rest of the guard scrambled to attention making a protective formation around katherine. A group of unfamiliar people with swords came out of the woods wearing dark clothing leaving no way to distinguish where they're from. Katherine got off her horse for staying on it would her leave vulnerable and more open to attacks. She withdrew her sword which she keeps at her side in order to be ready for any hidden attacks. 

There was about more than 20 men against the small group of guards Katherine had and top of that they were too far in the forest to be able to ask for help, as well as a storm brewing on top of them. The rain started pouring as if the sky was witnessing what was happening and cried for it. it was like out of a scene of a massacre. Regardless of how Katherine felt she was prepared to fight alongside the knights but one of them grabbed her and tried to lead her towards the path that would bring her towards the exit. " Stop it " Katherine commanded too overwhelmed with her feelings to think properly. 

I'm sorry my lady but i need to make sure your safe responded a knight while blocking two assassins from reaching her. katherine was then grabbed by Noah who was on a horse and was led away. She saw behind her the bodies of the rest of her guards four on the ground. The other two others with injuries all around trying to distract the twelve men left from the ones they killed.  An arrow struck the horse she and Noah were riding on causing them to fall on the ground. 

Katherine grabbed a stick and rope and made her own bow and arrow. She yanked an arrow she found out of a tree and proceeded to aim at the one who attacked them before hand. The arrow shot him in the torso causing him to fall of the tree he was on. She looked towards the carriage, that they had beforehand and it had been pushed down by the assassins off the edge of the path and broken into pieces upon landing on the ground below it. She was terrified at the thought of what would have happened to her had she been in it.

She heard someone yell and a loud bump and realized that the other guards had now died along with some of the other assassins . Now it was just Katherine and Noah against the 10 assassins left, A hand grabbed her out of nowhere and held a knife to her throat. Noah couldn't protect her because he was being kept busy by the others katherine was now panicking and felt around before she remembered she had a dagger in her pocket. She grabbed the dagger by the handle, raised the hand and struck as hard as she could against the one holding her. She was able to get free and realized in fear that she had killed someone for the first time in her life her hands started trebling before Noah yelled at her to snap out of it. 

"Death is a part of knight hood and now is not the time to panic" is what he yelled. "He's right Katherine thought to herself, you know all the rules to knighood, you even know how to wield a sword and there is no reason for you to be acting useless because if not what reason is there to save you, if  your not able to be a leader. She regained her composure getting back to back with Noah in order to take down the rest...... they had now been able to cut the assassins down by half, katherine thought that things were going to be alright but then a new guy came out from hiding and was aiming straight for Katherine's heart with a knife Katherine saw only a few inches from her face " is this how I'm going to die ? Katherine thought but Noah pushed her out of the way.  She heard a squish and then a cough she turned around and saw Noah on the ground.

No, no, no, no Katherine yelled, she ran to Noah. Please tell me your alright she pleaded, Noah knew he was going to die and he wasn't going to lie if it wasn't going to help anything. You have to move on Noah pleaded, whatever we thought we knew about the danger out there turned out to be much bigger than us. Now its up to you to find them and stop them because you know the people around you wont.  Tears were now streaming down Katherine's face uncontrollably, please don't cry Noah said I'm not its just the rain she replied biting back her sorrow. 

"Ah thats good, i want you to be brave and stop crying alright ?" Asked Noah. I will promised Katherine saying while holding his body, Good were his last words smiling before he died.  Katherine was now all alone against the last 3 assassins, she got up from her knees picked up the sword and faced the assassins around her. What are you going to do ? They asked your just a lady. Yes Katherine said but I'm also a knight and proceeded to cut the rest of them down without mercy. Blood was now all over the place covering her surroundings and herself from head to toe. She wiped the blood off her face with the sleeve of her dress.

Its actually funny Katherine chuckled to herself, I criticized my family calling them naive and yet here i am so i guess in actuality, i was just as naive as they were. Well that stops now she thought as she started walking down the path towards the exit that would enter her into the land of Verillia. From now on i will never trust anyone again and i also wont give up until i find out who was responsible for this . The rain finally let up as Katherine reached a small inn that people could stay in during their trips. She entered the doors and rung the bell at the desk.

"How may i help you ?" The the lady started before she gasped in shock at the sight of katherine soaked and covered in blood. Oh my dear what happened she begged. It seems i was ambushed in the woods Katherine replied. If you have an available one i would like a carriage home she asked politely. " of course" the lady at the desk replied but first we must change you. Katherine was given a warm shower and dress to wear, along with people who did her hair before she was brought to the carriage. ( i'll talk about it in chapter 6)

" I hope you stay safe on your journey back" the lady said. Thank you replied katherine, she mounted on the carriage and was now riding towards the Agriche Dukedom territory. Katherine went over everything that happened in her thoughts, a single tears trickled down her cheek but she wiped it away remembering what she promised Noah. She looked out the windows to look over the landscapes which she hadn't seen for a time but little did she know what awaited her at home. 

I cannot tell you how i almost cried writing this chapter guys 🤧 I am sorry for those who i made cry but i hope that you liked it.  I hope that you guy's have a wonderful Valentine's Day and spend it with those you care about. 💖
