"My office," Hange says, voice airy but you can tell it's an order regardless, and you follow them, not without giving them a fierce glare that makes them clench their hands into tight fists. You're proud you can rise a reaction out of them the same way they can to you, feeling smug all over again. "My walls are thicker than yours."

"Gonna yell at me again?" You provoke, skipping in front of them to stall them purposefully. "Gonna put me in my place?"

"You don't even know," Hange sneers. You force yourself to not react, but by the flicker of heat in their mostly black eyes, you can tell there must be something in your eyes that gives away your true feelings on the matter. You're fucked, for better or worse. "Get inside."

"Stop ordering me around, I'm not a child," you complain shortly, doing as you're told anyway, trying to ignore the hypocrisy of your actions against your words. "Nor am I your soldier."

The door shuts a little too hard to be an accident, and you shudder. You're truly alone with a very pissed off Hange now, and though you aren't afraid of the person you love the most, you definitely are afraid of the situation. Here is where it all comes to a head. Here is where everything falls apart.

"You're jealous," You point out after a short period of silence, instead of losing your cool, hoping against hope that Levi wasn’t wrong before, keeping distance between you and the Section Commander. "Why, I don't know, since there's literally nothing going on ever, but you are."

Hange glares at you, taking their glasses off. "Well if you knew that, why didn't you say anything before?"

So he was right. Stupid (Y/N), you should’ve taken his advice! Maybe now you’ll find out why.

"Because I didn't realise before. Because I didn't connect the fucking dots quick enough."

"Too right you didn't," they growl, starting to stalk towards you, and it's just like how you thought this would go (in both your normal worries about confronting them and then more recently your less innocent fantasies). "What am I meant to do, sit back and watch someone take you from me?"

"I'm literally my own person, Hange, I have friends that aren't you," your voice is starting to rise in volume, but fuck that, you have to drill it into their stupid head that they don't own you, not really. "Can't you see that doing this is driving us further apart?"

They seem to stop to consider your words before brushing them off. "You're wrong. I know you've realised just how much I mean to you, I can see it whenever you look at me. Just what do I mean to you, (Y/N)?"

There's heat in their words, but also hope. How do you even start? "I don't think I'm ready to tell you."

"Oh really? You're gonna be a coward now?"

"If that makes me one, then yeah! You're not thinking straight, and neither am I, and if I say the wrong thing, I'm gonna fucking lose you! And that's my biggest fear, Hange. I can't bear the thought of losing you!" You can't help the way you lose control of your voice, the sound of it something tragic, but it seems to finally register with the person still moving towards you slowly just how much you actually mean it. There are tears in your eyes, and your chest hurts. That was practically a confession. Time to bring it back a little. "You're my best friend, you mean the world to me."

For a moment, you think Hange has finally realised. That you said too much, their brows furrowed together in a way you can't help but find adorable despite the situation you're in.

"Then prove it. Show me that you mean it." Hange says, voice level and clear despite the intense gaze in their burgundy eyes, and you hate them for pretending to be calm when you know they aren't.
