"What's your name Greenie?" One of the boys in the Glade asked.
"I don't remember." The girl replied. Her voice sounded strange. She had never heard it before, at least she didn't remember hearing it. She had imagined it to sound sweeter and less "full".
"My name is Alby." Alby was a dark-skinned boy with short hair and a clean shaved face. He had a scowl on his face, she didn't know if it was directed towards her or he just always looked like this.
"I am the first in command. Which means I am the boss, you listen to me." He continued. The Greenie nodded in response. To be quite frank she was intimidated by him and his scowl. Really the only thing intimidating about him was the scowl other than that he just looked nice and like a good leader.
"I will be giving you the full tour tomorrow. Chuck over there will assign you a sleeping spot. Just don't do anything too stupid until then will you." Alby pointed to a younger looking kid who must be Chuck. He seemed to be twelve or thirteen years old. He was short and fat and had longer brown hair. Chuck stuck his hand up and smiled. The Greenie smiled back.
She looked around and was circled by a bunch of boys. Some poked at her as to see if she was actually real. It made her quite uncomfortable. She felt dizzy and overwhelmed with what was going on. Everyone else seemed to know what was happening how come she didn't? Did everyone arrive in this place like she just had?
The Greenie looked around. She was in a sort of courtyard surrounded by four huge walls. Each had an equally as enormous metal gate. Beyond the gates seemed to lay a sort of maze or labyrinth. What really was the difference between those anyway? Yet another thing she didn't know.
"Why don't I remember anything?" The Greenie asked, to no one in particular.
"The creators wiped our minds. They did that to all of us." The boy with the accent replied. "Most of us remember our names so yours should come back to you in a few days or so. My name is Newt by the way."
The Greenie looked at the blond boy who was apparently named Newt. She nodded and looked around the crowd. Next to Newt was a boy with short dark hair and dark brown eyes. He was tan, as if he was always in the sun. A muscular Asian boy stood in-between Newt and Chuck. The other boy she had heard taking before was also there. He had short blond hair and a broad jaw.
"What is this place?" The Greenie asked.
"No place good." The broad jawed boy said.
"Shut your hole, Gally." Newt said. Gally didn't react.
"Which keeper will she get?" Some other boy shouted. She couldn't see him.
"We don't know yet." Someone shouted back to the kid in the back of the crowd.
What was a keeper? The girl thought. These boys used lingo she did not understand. The girl was filled with curiosity, panic and fear but mostly confusion.
"Stop yapping or tomorrow's break is off the table." Alby yelled.

The girl had walked over to a tree and just sat there by herself. She had no idea what time of day it was. There was light but no sun. There were so many more things she didn't know that it was frustrating. What was her name? What were keepers? Who were the creators? Or what were they? Why were there so many teenage boys here and why was she the only girl? The girl looked around the place that they had called the Glade. She wondered if it really was a maze that lay behind those walls. Her eyes went from the gardens to animal pens to a forest when they finally settled upon a wonky looking building made out of wood in one of the corners of the Glade. It didn't really look structurally sound. Then she saw Alby and Newt walk up to her. Only now she realised that Newt was taller than Alby. The two were followed by a crowd of boys. What did she expect from them, they were boys who saw a girl for the first time. Alby and Newt sat down next to the Greenie.
"What is this place?" She asked the two boys.
"It's a long story." Alby said.
"I don't care, I want to know." She said. "Where are we and who sent me here?"
"If we told you everything you would die on the spot alright. Calm down." Alby replied with annoyance and anger hinted in his voice.
"I have every right to be upset!" The Greenie responded, raising her voice. Newt sighted and put his hand on Alby his shoulder.
"Alby, lay of a bit. You're doing more damage than good you know." Alby turned away from the girl and took a few deep breaths.
"We are all put in the Glade by the creators. We don't exactly know who or what they are but they send people up every month through the box." Newt pointed in the direction of the lift she came here with. "We also get supplies through there every so often. We can also send some requests."
"That's enough for today." Alby cut of Newt. "Otherwise I won't have anything to tell the Greenie on the tour." Alby then turned to her and continued. "I'm sorry if I was mean, I didn't intend for that. I'm just not good at these talks yet, you're one of the first Greenbeans since Nick was killed."
The girl's eyes widened. Newt slapped Alby his arm playfully.
"What are you? Klunk for brains? She's gonna have a heart attack. She hasn't heard nothing yet." Newt said.
What were all these words? She'd have to get used to them for sure.
"I'll give you the tour tomorrow morning, right after wake up." Alby said to the Greenbean.
Alby left for the wonky looking wooden building in the corner and some other people followed him.
The girl pulled her legs up to her chest and rested her head on her knees. Closing her eyes the black void of not knowing anything nagged at her again. Why did the Gladers use such strange language? She felt that she didn't fit in here. Not just because she was a different gender. Why was she here anyways? Was this place a prison? If so what did she do to get her locked up here. What was so horrible that she did to end up here?
"Why am I here?" The Greenie accidently said out loud. Newt put his hand on her arm.
"We've all been where you are now, we've all had our first day. Getting out of that dark box all lost and confused. Truth is that it gets worse but you'll learn. I know you're strong enough to handle it. Otherwise you wouldn't be here." Newt said. His voice indicated real empathy for the girl.
"Is this a prison?" The girl asked him in turn, raising her head from her knees and looking at Newt. She looked at his eyes and found them strangely comforting. It might be because of their deep colour. All she knew is that they were mesmerizing.
"You ask a lot of questions don't you." Newt smiled. "I don't have a good answer to be honest. Let's just be quiet and accept the change." The Greenie nodded and turned her head from looking at Newt. She stared out in front of her for a while. Her mind quiet for the first time in her new life.
"Stay here and I'll send Chuck to you. He's in charge of your sleeping arrangements." Newt said after a while of sitting in the peaceful quiet. And with that the girl watched the blond haired boy walk towards the wonky wooden building.
