My Own Sorrow

For the next three days I did not sleep. Instead I scrimmaged around cleaning every little thing I could find, I scrubbed the clothes and hung them to dry, I even fanned at them. I watered the plants and planted a few more, I began to fiddle with the clean clothes, sowing at anything and everything that needed to be sown. I did not neglect my son, but I only paid him mind when he needed a changing or food. Other then that he lay quiet in his cradle. I refused to speak to Maryellen, Ella, and Elizabeth, which ate at them something fierce. I felt dirty. I had no right to confess to the Prince. The moment of everything boosted my confidence a bit too high. I suppose this is how I'll punish myself.

I'd ignored Knight's cries, and soon felt guilty. I walked up the stairs and cooed him lightly. I do love my son. Knight is all I need. I fed Knight some soft bread, and began scrubbing the floor. I sung a lullaby to him as I continued scrubbing the floors, and was surprised to hear the pitter patter of feet up the stairs. Three sad faces greeted me with cleaning supplies abundant.

"We don't care what you say, were helping. You look worn out. Go to sleep please."

"I can't sleep, my heart is restless. Can you clean what I missed in here while I start in the bathroom."

"Tempeste."

I walked into the bathroom without giving them time to talk to me. After a good hour of continual cleaning, the front door slammed shut, and heavy steps rang around and bounced off the walls. The deep voice in which I knew all too well spoke lightly to my friends. And snapped in anger.

"Tempeste."

"Your Highness."

"Why so formal all of a sudden."

"I am just the maid, I must remain a level of respect."

"Tempeste don't feed me that fucking bullshit!"

His level of anger made me jump and drop my sponge. I turned to look at him, in the dirty state I was. He stalked towards me and grabbed me by my shoulders. I wouldn't have thought twice if he'd hit me, but instead his shoulders slumped and he hugged me tightly.

"Your Highness?"

"Tempeste, you connect me to the real world. You remind me that I'm only human. Don't stop. Don't stop doing the things you do."

"You sound exhausted. Go to bed. Take Knight in with you. I will come to bed when I finish cleaning."

The look in Diamond's eyes was that of weakness, he shook his head, turned and headed towards Knight. He picked him up, kissed him, and got into the bed. Ella, in respect covered them both and blew out the candles. They all walked towards me, their eyes shadowed by the moon.

"Good night. Please. Please get some rest."

"I will, I will. Go. I don't want the spell to be broken."

I walked after them, and locked the door. I went back up to the stairs that led to the sleeping chambers, and smiled at my boys. They slept so peacefully. I peeled off my dirty clothes and let down my hair. I walked in my skin to the balcony, and sat against the railing. I stared up at the stars and frowned.

Something woke me. Something that sounded like footsteps below me. I hurriedly backed up from the ledge and saw the head of what was apparently a man. A man who stood staring at the balcony. Something moved behind me and I was swooped up. I knew his arms instantly. Diamond had carried me to the bed and placed me beside Knight. He motioned for me to be quiet and left.

He didn't even flinch at the sight of my body. Was I that unattractive?
