I listened intently as my son read his first book. Every once in a while I had to help him to stop the stuttering spells. When he reached the last page, he closed it and ran off to play with his pets. I cleaned up the kitchen area, and checked the bread I was baking. The sun shone bright into the window and my sunflowers were blooming beautifully. I took pride in my accomplishment. In that pride, I knew that Diamond could see those sunflowers too. He too, enjoyed their bright color.
The door opened and I turned to greet a new face. For a moment I was surprised, but in turn I smiled brightly. In front of me stood a boy about my age and a few inches above my head. He had fiery red hair, freckles, and bright green eyes. He returned my smile and bowed.
"I am sorry for the intrusion. Elizabeth, my head, told me to come here to check for maintenance. She never said anything about anyone living here."
"Please, close the door. My son's pets might get out. Yes, I know Elizabeth she is one of my dear friends. Not many know I stay here. Nevertheless, thanks for taking the time to come. Some of the hinges on my cupboards are loose and I have a broken handle in the bathroom. Other than that I really don't know if there's anything else."
"I will get right to it, may I ask your name? Not to be rude, my name is Ethan."
"My name is Tempeste, my sons name is Knight, the cats name is Petri, and the dogs name is Bubbles. It's very nice to make your aqquantince."
"Likewise, well if you do not mind, I will start."
"Please don't mind me. I am baking bread, when it is done, please do have some."
I smiled warmly at the red-haired, green-eyed kid, and made my way up the stairs. Knight was cuddled up with the Bubbles while Petri chased his ball of yarn. I walked onto the balcony and tended to the flowers. Welcoming the warm sun and the fresh smell of bread. Occasionally Knight's giggles would bounce off the walls and Ethan's constant hammering would join. It was a cherishable moment. The house had lacked a man's touch for a while. I myself, lacked the companionship of the opposite sex. No, not love, I would never love another, but friendship. I would love a friend.
After about an hour I smiled down at my fluffy bread. Knight sat at the table with a look of desire on his face and Ethan's halted whistling let new know he had finished. He came down the stairs, wiped his face and hands, and joined Knight.
"Hello squirt."
"I'm Knight."
"I'm Ethan."
"You want bread too?"
"Yes, yes I do."
"Sit next to me then."
I laughed and gave them their serving of bread. I brought a bowl of strawberries and blueberries to the table and fresh milk. We ate and we laughed, the day passing us by. Knight excused himself for the night, and the moon was our only other accompaniment. I smiled at Ethan, who's freckled face often turned red.
"Tonight, tonight was very lively. Thank you so much for staying. I shouldn't have kept you this long, but I find the need for a males company."
"You both are like flowers grown in a barren wasteland. You have a striking resemblance to angels, yet you hide your wings by staying away from the eyes of your beholders. I'd love to see you spread them Miss Tempeste. If you don't mind, I'd like to cone back for more pleasurable times. Your son has put a hankering on my heart. And you my lady, none the less."
"I'd like that. Maybe tomorrow we can go for a picnic?"
"Better yet, on my father's farm there are horses and ponies. The three of us can go riding, have you ever been?"
"Not once."
"Oh then please! When I finish my work around the palace, we must go."
"Okay Ethan. I do not mind."
"It is high time I leave. Sleep good tonight, and thank you once again."
"No Ethan, thank you."
I followed Ethan to the door, and watched him leave. I looked up at the moon and tried to smile. Which was a failed attempt. Because in a far up window to the right, I saw my lover. He was being caressed by another's hand. I slammed the door shut and cried. I wept until I fell asleep. Right there against the door.
