Later that evening, Sophie found herself wandering aimlessly through the streets of Rosewood, the familiar paths she had walked countless times now feeling foreign. The usual sounds of the town—cars passing by, the hum of streetlights flickering—seemed distant. She was in a daze, her mind racing with a whirlwind of thoughts, but none of them were helpful.
It was the text. That damn message. It refused to leave her, gnawing at her with each passing moment. And with it, came him.
Jason.
She had pushed him to the back of her mind for months, tried to forget the way he had looked at her, the way his smile made her heart skip, even when she knew she shouldn't have been thinking about him. She'd never truly been in love, but with Jason, it had felt different. Real. He was everything a girl like her could ever want—charming, mysterious, dangerous in all the right ways—but something about him haunted her. She didn't know why she felt this pull toward him. It was irrational. She was supposed to be stronger than this. But every thought, every breath, seemed to lead her back to him.
Sophie couldn't even pinpoint the moment when her feet began moving on their own, when they carried her towards the Dilaurentis house—the old house, now abandoned. It felt like a magnetic force, pulling her against her will. She couldn't explain it, but she couldn't stop herself either.
As she rounded the corner onto the road, a flashing siren cut through her thoughts. A police car sped past her, its lights reflecting off the pavement as it screeched to a halt in front of the house. Sophie froze.
The sirens. The flashing lights. The ambulances.
The coroner's van.
Sophie's stomach turned over. She couldn't let herself admit it. No. This isn't happening. She could feel the panic bubbling up inside her, but she forced herself to hold it down. She told herself it was a mistake, a coincidence. There was no way it could be what she thought it was.
But deep down, she knew. She knew exactly what was going on.
She forced herself to take a step forward, her heart pounding in her chest as the crowd outside the property grew. She saw a few familiar faces—people from the neighborhood, onlookers murmuring among themselves. And then, a voice cut through the haze.
"Sophie!"
She turned, her breath catching in her throat. It was Nova. And standing beside her was Melissa Hastings, a grim expression on her face.
"Nova, what's going on?" Sophie asked, her voice trembling as she rushed toward her sister. Nova didn't respond right away. Her eyes told Sophie everything she needed to know. The sympathy in her sister's gaze was enough to make Sophie's heart shatter.
