The house was eerily quiet, save for the soft crackling of the fire and the low murmur of voices. After the traumatic events at the party, none of the girls wanted to be alone, and so they had gathered in Spencer's living room, seeking comfort from one another. The fire cast flickering shadows across the room, and the warmth of the flames was a stark contrast to the coldness each of them felt inside.
Hanna was sitting on the couch, huddled under a pile of thick, plush blankets, her body tense with exhaustion. The events of the night had clearly shaken her to the core. Sophie sat beside her, gently rubbing her back in slow, comforting circles, trying to offer whatever reassurance she could, though she knew Hanna was far from okay.
"Here's some aspirin," Aria said softly, holding out two small white tablets. She looked at Hanna with concern, her eyes filled with sympathy. "You want me to make you some soup? It might help."
Hanna barely glanced up at her, the deep circles under her eyes betraying the toll the night had taken. She shook her head weakly, her voice hoarse. "Thanks, but I'm not hungry."
Aria sighed, glancing helplessly at the others before retreating to the kitchen to look for something else to help. Emily had just walked in from the car, her arms loaded with bags. She walked toward the couch, handing Hanna her bag. "Here's your bag. I think Caleb called, your phone was ringing."
Hanna didn't respond. She stared blankly into the fire, her expression distant as if she were seeing something far beyond the flames. Sophie exchanged a glance with Spencer, both of them understanding the weight of the moment.
Spencer walked over to Hanna and sat beside her, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Han, I know you may not be ready to talk about this, but the sheriff said they're gonna drag the lake first thing in the morning."
Hanna's eyes darkened, and she shook her head vigorously. "Lucas isn't in the lake." Her voice cracked as she said it, but there was a determination in her words that suggested she was trying to convince herself more than anyone else.
Sophie sighed quietly and leaned in, her tone gentle yet firm. "Lucas didn't come back to shore, Han. We waited for him."
Hanna's jaw clenched, her fingers curling into fists as she pulled the blanket tighter around herself. "He knows how to swim, alright?" she snapped, her voice brittle. "He's out there somewhere. I can feel it."
Sophie exchanged a look with Spencer. The tension in Hanna's words was palpable, but Sophie couldn't help but feel that Hanna was holding on to the last shred of hope she had, refusing to face the possibility that Lucas could be involved in something darker.
"I-I still can't believe Lucas would help A," Aria muttered, her voice tinged with disbelief. She stared at her hands as if trying to will the thought away. "I never thought he could be capable of something like this."
