CLEMMY
I can say without a doubt this is not how I expected this morning to go. Opening the door and seeing Graham almost took my breath away. It has been way too long and the phone calls and video calls just aren’t doing it. I had no idea that he was going to be in town and I was almost ready to kick his ass for not telling me he’d be flying in, but then Robbie made his presence known and Graham’s entire mood changed.
“What the fuck is he doing here?” Graham glares behind me into the house.
“Cut the crap, Graham. You knew he was back in town. I mean, we talked on the phone just two days ago.”
“I knew he was in town, I knew he was helping with Vivi, but that’s a little different than standing half-naked in your fucking house in the morning.” He points in at Robbie who is standing in just his pajama pants. “What’s going on here? You aren’t honestly doing this, are you Clemmy?”
I put my hands on my hips and respond with a bit of attitude. “Doing what exactly? You mean living my life the way I want to? If that’s what your question is then Yes, I’m honestly doing this and maybe you can be the first in our family to know that Robbie and going to move in and we’re going to make this work.” I glance back at Robbie and smile at him then back to Graham. “Because I love him, Graham.”
“So, hey, I’m going to go get dressed,” Robbie says from behind me, hooking his thumb to point back to the bedroom. His exit is much appreciated to break the awkward moment with my cousin.
“I have a surprise for you.”
“Besides you being here in front of me instead of a million time zones away?”
“Besides that.” Graham turns around and motions to the car parked in my driveway. The car door opens and out steps his girlfriend Akira, a woman that I’ve gotten to know a bit, but only through long-distance communication. The two of us meet at the edge of the front porch and join in an embrace as if we’ve been friends forever.
“Akira! I can’t believe you’re here. I mean, I can’t believe either of you two are here. I’m really in a state of shock right now.”
“Graham wanted me to wait in the car to surprise you. Sorry I couldn’t stop his stubborn behavior. That man I saw? That was Robbie.”
She wiggles her eyebrows and I find myself blushing in response to her antics. “Yeah, that was him.” I take her hand and start walking to my front door. “We can talk more, why don’t you two come inside.”
Graham follows Akira and me inside and we are greeted by a, now dressed, Robbie and Vivienne. Her eyes grow as wide as saucers with she sees her Uncle Graham standing in the living room. She books it towards him and jumps into his arms in a similar way that I did a few moments ago. The only difference is that Graham could lift her up a little easier because she’s smaller.
“Uncle Graham!” The two of them share a long embrace that has been far overdue. Before he left to follow his dreams, Graham was my shoulder to lean on and because of that bond, he became Vivienne’s as well.
“There is no way that you’re the same little girl that I saw last time I was home! You’re way too big and look how long your hair is!”
“I haven’t got it cut in a super long time. Not even a trim.”
“I can tell. God, I missed you so much, Pumpkin.” He sets her down on the ground, but they don’t let go of each other. “Did you see who I brought here with me?”
