CLEMMY

“Hurry up, Mommy!” Vivienne yells from the backseat of the truck.

“Yeah, Mommy, hurry up!” Robbie joins in on Vivienne’s yelling as well. If she wasn’t right behind him, I’d totally flip him off. I had to make one last trip to the bathroom before we hit the road. Lord knows after giving birth to Vivienne, my bladder shrunk to the size of a jelly bean and I want to make it at least a few hours before we need to stop.

“Will you two hold your horses?” I climb into the truck and get buckled up, “I was on my way, not my fault you two moved so quickly.”

“We need to make sure to hit the road though. Grandpa Mitch said he doesn’t want us driving when it is dark outside, especially through the mountains. He was very serious about it.” I turn back to look at Vivienne and she has her arms crossed over her chest, giving me her serious look.

She’s a grandpa’s little girl for sure. When we were going over our travel plans with my dad last weekend, he said over and over again that we needed to get on the road early and limit our stops so we weren’t driving in the dark. It wasn’t something Robbie and I were worried about, but Vivi has brought it up in pretty much every conversation that we’ve had about when we’re leaving for our trip.

Graham finished up his time in Arizona playing in Spring Training games but didn’t make it on Colorado’s major league team. He did, however, secure a spot on their Triple-A minor league team that plays in Colorado Springs. Robbie and I decided to make a long weekend out of a trip up there to see Graham play and visit with Akira. We took Vivi out of school for Friday and Monday. We don’t tend to make a lot of trips anywhere, so this is a new experience for all of us.

After our first stop, Vivienne ended up falling asleep, giving Robbie and me some time to talk and not worry about eavesdropping little ears.

“Did you decide what you wanted to get Laney and Landon for their graduation gifts yet?” Brooke’s twins are graduating in just two weeks and their party is going to be a week after that. With so many of us in the second generation being born around the same time, it seems like we’ve had graduations every year. It’ll be kind of weird next year when Porter and Ella graduate because it’ll be back to just younger kids. Of course at the rate my cousins are bringing kids into this world, it will be like this in another dozen years or so.

“I don’t know, neither of them plans on going away for college so I can’t think of anything that makes sense.”

“What did you get everybody else?”

“For Prue, I got her a new bedding set and my favorite pillow for her dorm room, and for Iris I just ended up giving my parents some cash and we just put all our names on the card. I didn’t have that much money when she graduated.”

“We could just do money. I mean, that’s what I liked the most too.”

“That’s what you liked the MOST?” I drawl out my question to him and he starts laughing and then reaches over the center console and grabs my hand.

“Alright, I take it back. The gift I liked most was the one that you gave me.” He lifts up my hand and kisses the back of it. “I guess when you think about it, Vivienne is kind of a graduation gift, huh?”

“I’m definitely not going to suggest that as a gift to Laney or Landon.”

“Oh geez, Preston would raise holy hell.”

“Speaking of holy hell, did you hear about Ella’s boyfriend?”

Robbie’s head quickly snaps my direction and then back to the road, “No fucking way, tell me everything.”
