CLEMMY
I place the final hairpin in Akira’s hair and take a step back to admire my work. “I think you look absolutely gorgeous, what do you think?”
She looks in the mirror, turning her head a few times to see as much as she can, but the smile on her face tells me everything I need to know. Besides Vivienne, I don’t do hair for many women. Not that I can’t do an updo, but it isn’t in my comfort zone anymore. Akira asked me to do her hair and since we were having just a small ceremony and reception, I was more than happy to do it.
“I love it, Clemmy. Thank you so much.” She turns around in her chair and pulls me down for a hug. “I feel like I’ve known you for so long, but today is a great day because you’re officially going to be part of my family.”
“Don’t be silly, we were family many video calls ago. I’m going to see what Bev is up to and if she’s ready for us yet.”
I leave Akira in the bridal room and venture out to the reception barn to find Bev. She’s bossing people around, per usual, but stops when she sees me and starts walking in my direction. “Is my bride ready?”
“I just finished her hair and she is ready to go. What about Graham? Have you talked to him yet?”
“No, not yet. Walker and Miles were in there with him, so I assume that he’s ready. Do you mind checking in on them? I’ve got to get connected on the web camera so we can live stream this for her family and then I need to get everybody seated.”
“I’m on it, don’t worry.” I begin to walk away, but Bev calls my name so I turn back around and she’s heading my way with plastic containers of flowers.
“Would you make sure that Graham gets her boutonniere and the bouquet for Akira?”
“Of course. And Bev?”
“Yeah?”
“You’re the mother of the groom, so try to take some time to enjoy the day too.”
She smiles and gives me a kiss on the cheek. “You’re right and I love you for saying that. Once I get on the webcam I’ll find my seat and have Brooke take over.”
“Good, I love you too.”
I walk the other direction that where I originally came from and knock on the door to the office where Graham was going to get ready today. It takes only a few seconds for Walker to open the door for me and let me in. “Hey Clemmy, you’re looking beautiful today.”
“Thank you, Uncle Walker, Akira made me buy a new dress too when we were out the other day. It has been a while since I’ve had a reason to get really dressed up so I obliged.”
Miles is sitting on the desk in the office and Graham is standing in front of the mirror messing with his tie and over-styling his hair. He turns around and smiles at me when I walk in, not wasting a second and pulling me in for a hug. “Hey Clem, are you here to make sure I’m not backing out?”
I give him a playful nudge. “Don’t even tease, Graham. I know you better than that though.”
“I know, I shouldn’t say anything like that. I wouldn’t even imagine it though.” He looks at Miles and Walker, “Do you two mind giving me just a moment to talk to Clem?”
“Yeah, of course, brother. I better go see if Ember needs help wrangling the crew so she can set up the cake anyway.”
“Bev is out there freaking out about the webcam, so maybe you two could help with that too,” I add.
