ROBBIE

“I’m nervous, it is normal to be this nervous?” My leg shakes uncontrollably as I sit in the very uncomfortable chairs in the waiting room of Clementine’s doctor’s office. These chairs were certainly not meant for men my size, which I find odd, because I imagine a lot of dads-to-be sit in these chairs.

“Totally normal. I’m kind of nervous too if I’m being honest.” Clementine squeezed my hand a little tighter as she admitted her own feelings.

“You seem so calm.”

She laughs a bit, “I think I’m still working through the emotions on this one. I keep pinching myself. If I wasn’t feeling nauseous all the damn time I might not believe this entire thing was even true.

She says it with a smile on her face, but boy do I feel bad for her. It’s been two weeks since she dropped the baby bomb on me and the morning sickness and all-day nausea showed up about three days after she took the test. She said that it was the same way with Vivienne and she’s using the same tricks to ease the pain. Our coffee maker was converted to a tea brewer. Every morning she brews ginger tea with honey to help calm her stomach. Then she sucks on Jolly Ranchers all day.

We’re not allowed to have chicken or fish anymore unless it is tuna. For some reason, she gets late-night cravings for tuna fish sandwiches. I didn’t realize cravings happened so quickly, but if she says she wants something I’m sure as hell going to get it for her. Her stomach is still flat, but I know that is normal she wasn’t going to sprout a baby belly overnight, what she did sprout overnight were her new breasts. I’ve never had a problem with her decent handful, but holy shit I think she’s already doubled in size.

“Clementine Alexander?” The woman standing at the door called her name and she stood up. I stayed in my seat, not knowing the proper protocol for these appointments, but Clem only took two steps before she stopped and turned back to me.

“Are you not coming in?”

I shrug and stand up, “I didn’t know if I could or not.”

Clementine takes my hand and I walk with her towards the woman standing at the door. “You can be part of everything, Robbie. I mean, when I have to pee in the cup I’m going to ask that you not join me in the bathroom, but other than that, I want you there. I don’t want you to miss a thing.”

She smiles at the nurse and she leads up down the hall and to the scale. I make sure to not focus on the scale when she steps on it. I don’t know what she’s thinking. Not that I know what a number means as far as a weight for women. Plus, Clementine is perfect and beautiful just the way she is. Once that is done, we move into a smaller room where the nurse takes her blood pressure, temperature, and asks her some general questions.

“And your last period?”

“I don’t know. I don’t take the placebo pills, so there are months I go without a period or super light spotting. I’m almost positive I had a period at the end of May, but I honestly don’t know.”

The nurse makes a few notes on her file, “We were planning on doing a dating ultrasound today anyway, it just helps to know where we should expect the size of the fetus to be. It isn’t a problem though, we’ll figure that all out.”

“I didn’t have an ultrasound for my first appointment my last pregnancy. Is that normal procedure now?”

“It usually depends on insurance coverage.”

“Oh, that makes sense.”

The nurse smiles and then pulls out a gown from the cabinet. “Go ahead and change into this, you can keep your shirt and bra on, but nothing down below, please.”
