A/N: Here's the slightly different version of the last oneshot. The basic premise is the same, but L and Light's conversation is a little different here.

Light opened his eyes and looked around him. What he saw could only be described as a dead land. The sky was dark and gray, the ground was cold and black, and there was no greenery or colour anywhere.

Light didn't know what to do. He had nothing to do and nowhere to go. So he decided to start walking. If he walked then maybe he'd end up somewhere.

Light didn't know how long he walked, but a familiar figure with messy dark hair sitting in a crouched position came into his line of vision.

No...it can't be....how did he end up here? He doesn't deserve to be here.

"Hello Light-kun."

What are you doing dear, aren't you tired?

L observed Light's appearance. His clothes had holes and were soaked from blood, his hair stuck to his forehead, and his eyes were downcast.

"Sit with me Light-kun, you look exhausted." L patted the ground beside him.

Light sat beside him with an exhausted sigh.

What are you doing here? I don't think you were invited.

"Why are you here L? I figured you'd be in heaven." It came out ruder than Light had intended, but he wasn't exactly ecstatic to see L knowing he won their battle.

L laughed softly. "There's no heaven Light-kun. There's no hell either. This is it. Nothingness."

So this is what Ryuk was talking about.

"So, how does it feel L?" Light asked sourly.

I recognize that you're upset. I know they did you wrong.

"Does it matter Light-kun? We ended up in the same place anyways." L looked at Light sympathetically and brushed the hair out of his eyes.

"They got you bad Light-kun. I'm sorry you had to go through that." L said looking at the bullet wounds all over Light's torso.

"You're sorry?! How could you be saying that right now?! You should be celebrating! You got exactly what you wanted, Kira's downfall!"

L shook his head. "Kira may have lost, but in a way I still failed."

Failed? How did he fail? His successors beat me.

"What do you mean?"

"When I took on the Kira case, I made a promise to myself to save everyone from Kira. But I didn't. I couldn't even save you from Kira's wrath."

Light's eyes widened. Save me?...

"Kira lost and died, and dragged Light Yagami down with him. And I couldn't save Light Yagami from Kira. It's something that has been weighing me down for a while. So I'm sorry Light-kun."

"Stop saying that L! You shouldn't be sorry! I should be the one who's sorry! I'm the one who lost control of myself! I'm the one who made us both end up here!" Light screamed, grabbing L's shirt collar.

L took Light's hand. "I forgive you Light-kun. Do you forgive me?"

Light squeezed L's hand and sighed. Sure, L put him through hell at some points, but if he forgave Light for what he did to him, then it would be wrong if Light didn't forgive him as well. Of course I forgive you, L. It would be wrong if I didn't."

L smiled softly. "I suppose we were the villain in each other's story Light-kun. Looking back at it now, we both seemed very childish during our battle."

Light laughed quietly leaning against L. "Yes, I suppose you're right."

"But it's okay Light-kun, we have a second chance now. Maybe this time we can be the hero in each other's story."
