the sounds of roosters calling and announcing the arrival of a new day was something i had grown used to. my body almost automatically ran in the morning with things like getting out of bed, starting breakfast and getting ready.some days, if i didn't have to head to town, it was just me and the farm. the animals and all sorts of bugs became my everyday life.
i was in the process of making pancakes before i heard soft rapping at the door.
visits from the townspeople weren't rare but usually they called me and let me know that they would be visiting. i don't remember getting any calls.
regardless, i pulled open the wooden door, leaving the screen door shut.
it was the boy from last night.
"um," i glanced around behind him, "can i help you?"
"is this y/n l/n's farm?" he asked, voice deep even for how early it was.
"yes, and i repeat again, can i help you?"
"i'm looking for a job." the boy stated bluntly.
the situation was.. amusing to say the least so i decided to entertain it.
i clicked open the screen door to be able to see the boy better. i held it open with my foot and leaned against the door's frame.
"and what makes you think you'll find a job here, mr.."
"wakatoshi ushijima."
"mr. ushijima."
it was hard to read the stranger's expression as it rarely seemed to change.
"there was a boy in town," he explained, "and he pointed me in the direction of your farm."
"right.. and did you manage to catch the boy's name?" i asked but already knew.
"i believe it was a baker, tadashi?" and there was a small furrow in wakatoshi's eyebrows.
"of course it was." i muttered under my breath.
"well, i'm sorry to break it to you, but i'm afraid i don't have any open positions at the farm. it's all self-run and i haven't had any problems that way. if it's not broken, don't fix it, right?"
i almost felt bad but a complete stranger had shown up at my door looking for a job, one that i didn't even have available.
"that's unfortunate." wakatoshi pressed his lips together.
"yeah, sorry. maybe keep trying in town? i think the grocery could use your.." i looked him up and down, "physique with their orders."
he nodded and i watched his figure retreat to a dark car then returned to my food.
"shit." the entire underside of my pancake was burnt.
i threw it away and poured more batter into the pan, turning the heat down a bit, before grabbing my phone.
i opened my recent text conversation and hit the dial button. it only rang twice before the line connected.
"tadashi yamaguchi."
"so i'm guessing the guy got there?" i heard tadashi giggle on the other side of the phone.
"you know i don't have job openings, freak, why'd you send him my way?" i huffed and kept a careful eye on my pancake.
"because! did you see him? he's got your type practically written all over him and plus, you can tell he's really strong, he can help out on the farm."
