VIOLAS POV
*1 WEEK LATER*
At this point, I'm starting to lose hope. The first day Todd went without the chemical Lee was giving him, he immediately got his Noise back. But ever since then there has been no progress whatsoever. I've been in this room for most of every day for the past week. I get up to go and eat and squeeze Todd's hand before leaving.
Viola? My hand is cold. Viola?
is the last thing I hear as I leave. I head towards the cafeteria as I see a familiar blonde Lee slip through the entrance door. Almost unnoticed. Almost. He seems very quiet, walking in the shadows, keeping his head down. Of course the thing not to do would be to follow him. So I start following him. Because I kinda have a history for doing what I'm told not to do... even if I'm the one who says not to. But that can get me into trouble. Like it got Maddy into trouble. I asked her to sneak away with me, to see if I could scope out the area, and some prick-head soldier just shot her. Just like that. All my fault. Shaking the thought out of my head, I keep walking after Lee. Who seems to be heading to Todd's room.Todds room + Lee = Trouble...Possibly death? No, let me try that combination again: Todd's room + Lee + a nosy Viola = a LOT of trouble and possibly death? Yeah that seems about right. The death wouldn't be mine or Lee's but Todds. Who knows what Lee could do to him. Thiking of that, I hurry up just incase he tries anything. I stand again at the 2 way mirror, watching him. Doesn't he know it's here by now? Oh well. I expect him to pull something out. A vial, a gun, a knife, anything. But all he does is stand and look at Todd. But something's--different... He looks troubled. Shaken.
Could it be that I yelled at him? That everyone is practically shunning him? In all fairness, he deserved every bit, so if he's going to mope over that, then he shouldn't have tried it in the first place. But I wait for him to leave...which he doesn't. In fact, he grabs a chair and sits down. His back slightly hunched, his elbow on his thigh, and his arm and hand holding up his head, his brow furrowed in...frustration? It kind of...reminds me of someone who's thinking. I decide to call him the "thinker".
But just as I got up to leave, seeing no point anymore, he gets up too. I expect him to leave but he stands and places his hand on Todd's shoulder and bows his head down as if...praying. He looks up, directly at me. I can't tell if it's a coincidence or if he knows I'm here, so I move from one side to the other to see if his blind gaze follows me. It does. Then he goes, "You turned the 2-way part of a 2 way mirror off Viola." meaning I've been unmuted and am able to be seen (but he can't see so that's not a big deal). crap. But it's the way he said it that startled me. Calm, and curt, too calm that it made me step back towards Todd's bed. He continues, "Can't I just visit my ex-competitor without interruptions?" I catch the sarcasm in his voice.
"You can't blame me for wondering what you were doing going to Todd's room, and half the time you didn't know I was here."
"True, I didn't. And yes I suppose I can't blame you for following me. But do you not trust me?"
His words are starting to slow and harden, giving me a sign to step back again. I take several steps back and my lower back hit's the rail of Todd's bed.
"After all that we've been through?"
Something behind me moves and I go stiff.
Viola stop.
You're Imagining things.
Todd's Noise is still just grey.
He isn't awake.
I look at the door slightly open. I might be able to make a run for it. So I start to stall him. "Do I have a reason to?"
Lee takes 4 steps towards me and says words that make me stand in my place.
"Yes, because I love you."
These words disgust me for some reason coming from him, and makes me realize how much I miss Todd.
I look up at him and whisper, "I. Love. Todd."
His jaw clenches and every visible muscle on his neck flexes.
And then he swings at me.
