Jonathan's sword fell down for the third time in the past 10 minutes. I smirked as I bent down to pick it up again.

"Sometimes I wonder if you really are Jace Herondale's son.." I said, "he's literally the best....So is Emma Carstairs but I haven't interacted much with her."

"Shut up" Jonathan snatched his sword from your hand, "let me get my daggers then we'll talk."

Shadowhunters, also known as Nephilim, are a secretive race of beings who are humans born with Angel blood. They have fought demons  and have lived alongside Downworlders (Warlocks, Vampires, Faeries, Werewolves) in the Shadow World for well over a thousand years, creating their own culture and civilization within human society. Their mandate is to keep the peace in the Shadow World and keep it hidden from the mundane (regular humans) world while protecting the inhabitants of both worlds.

Despite their ancestry, Shadowhunters are mortal and therefore vulnerable to old age and death; however, their angelic blood endows them with special abilities that allow them to achieve feats beyond what's humanly possible through the application of angelic runes (aka Marks) .

Jonathan and I had been practicing in the Training room of the New York Institute. Even though it isn't the biggest institute, it is one of the most influential ones.. Jonathan's parents are the Co-heads, they run it together.

It looks like an old gothic cathedral. It is covered by a glamour- which is basically some sort of magic to shield it from mundanes who see the church abandoned and almost in ruins.

The interior has several corridors and hallways adorned with arches. The nave of the Institute, still with its pews, is also well kept, with witchlight -which is a special grey stone that emits light for us-   and tapers in candelabras as its main source of light.

The training room is located in the attic. It has huge beams located twenty feet in the air that are used to teach Shadowhunters balance and flexibility.

An Institute is an asylum for Shadowhunters , and in some cases Downworlders and Mundanes under their protection, and a safe house meant to lodge and assist Nephilim from around the world in their quest to kill demons . They are found in every major city across the world and are often located in churches or built on holy ground. Every Institute is run by a Shadowhunter or a pair of Shadowhunters with the position of head or co-heads of the Institute, respectively.

Jonathan William Herondale was not only my cousin but also my closest friend and Parabatai. He was the second eldest kid of the Herondales, Clary and Jace and the twin of Celine. He was named after Aunt Clary's elder brother Jonathan Morgenstern.. Some people thought that Jonathan Morgenstern was the villain and so did everyone in my family for a long time, but it wasn't his fault that he grew without love and literally with demon blood in his veins.. But he did cause a lot of destruction to the Shadowhunter realm..
