Elia got up from her bed and looked around. The dimly lit room highlighted the sleeping faces of all her dorm mates. Tonight, she was meeting up with Fred to finish a polyjuice potion that Alison and Elia have been brewing for a month now. Even though polyjuice was banned from Hogwarts, the two girls wanted to brew it just to see if they were capable of brewing such a complex potion.
Elia carefully snuck out of her common room, each step being more precise than the lass, then headed down the long staircase that leads to the halls. Once she reached the bottom, she was met with a sluggish Fred leaning on one of the pillars. His sleepy eyes met hers as he lifted his head.
Elia smiled and said, "you look terrible"
"Reckon I'm still better looking than you," He said following with a drowsy smirk which was quickly interrupted by a big yawn.
Elia rolled her eyes and the two walked the dark halls of the castle until they reached the potions classroom. Once they got in, they headed to the table in the very back of the classroom where a camouflaged cauldron sat. Elia removed the lid, "Grab a second cauldron" she requested while stirring the thick mixture. Fred placed a heavy pot next to her and watched as she started dividing the potion into it.
"can't you get expelled for making polyjuice?" Fred asked with sleep still in his voice. "Yeah, but only if they catch you" Elia replied smiling cheekily, "Can you grab that jar of lacewings please?"
Fred's lip curled into a smirk "I like the way you think Quill¨ He said, placing a sturdy jar next to her and leaning on the table with his elbows in front of him. Elia felt his gaze on her, causing her hand on the spoon to go slightly unsteady and her body to overcome with little butterflies. He then looked at the thick concoction,¨I can't believe I've never used polyjuice in a prank".
"Well polyjuice is a pretty advanced potion" Elia brought up as Fred scowled at her playfully, "You know I'm a lot smarter than you think?" he said, making Elia scrunch her nose," really? Well, you having to retake muggle studies for two years tells me otherwise". Fred threw his head back in defeat, "Whatever, to be fair science is very confusing. But aside from that, I'm definitely smarter than you, plus I'm older than you" Fred grinned as if that was a valid argument.
"that's right, you're graduating this year. What's your plan once you leave?" Elia asked genuinely. "Not telling you" Fred grinned holding on to his pride causing him to receive a playful punch to his arm, "Noooo, tell me!!!" Elia begged foolishly as Fred denied pridefully, "Nope, It's top secret. The only people who know are me and George, and that's not going to change any time soon" Fred said with a glad persistent look on his face.
Elia looked at him and smiled at the stubborn child in front of her. Fred being so determined to not saying anything enticed the curious Ravenclaw. Elia liked seeing him be very careful about something important to him since she's never really seen him be careful with anything. Elia laughed and rolled her eyes, "Whatever Weasley you'll tell me one day, As for now- the potion is... done"
Fred's eyes widened in response and bit back a deceitful grin, and prepared himself for the eventful night ahead of them.
--------------------------------
It was the night of the prank, Elia walked through the giant doors that lead to the great hall and headed to her usual spot next to her friends at the Ravenclaw table. She sat next to Alison and turned her back towards the talking lot. In front of her, Elia poured the vile that held the polyjuice into an empty chalice. She then took out the long, black strand of hair and dropped it in, and watched as the thick potion bubbled into a more thinned-out mixture. The mixture kept a dark black color making the juice look like pure black ink. Elia looked up at the Gryffindor table to see Fred, who was already watching her. She held up a subtle thumbs-up, indicating that the polyjuice was ready and Fred returned the gesture. Fred and George then got up to leave so that there wouldn't be any speculations that this was a famous Weasley prank and get detention or anything.
With her wand hiding in one hand and the chalice in the other, Elia headed to the Slytherin table. She received her usual anxious feeling that she always got when she had to socialize with people she didn't know, however, it was overlooked due to her excitement in getting revenge. She looked for the platinum blonde boy and walked over to the empty space next to him.
Elia sat next to Draco and greeted, "hi" while casually placing the chalice on the table. Draco raised a bitter eyebrow at her, "do I know you?"
"you don't, but I was so impressed with your well-deserved win at the Slytherin-Gryffindor match, I just had to know how you did it" Elia falsely praised Draco as the bitter kid turned his body to face her, "Ahh yes, that was a good match. You see, it's all about skill and technique-".
Elia allowed Draco to ramble as she kept eye contact with him, pretending to pay attention to every word. She then carefully swished her wand underneath the table and watched as the polyjuice in her chalice start to disguise itself into the current drink that Draco was drinking. Once the potion successfully looked like his drink, Elia grabbed the cup Draco was using, which now looked like the pitch-black polyjuice, and pretended to drink it. She sniffed the chalice making sure that it wasn't the potion, then smiled under her breath when the sweet smell of grape juice filled her nose, confirming that the switching spell worked.
"-And yeah, that's basically how I won the quidditch match against the Gryffindors" Draco said pridefully as Elia nodded her head, "You are absolutely brilliant Draco, anyways, I've got to head back, but thank you so much for telling me!" Elia cheerfully said, flattering Draco as best as she could. She got up with the new chalice and winked at the twins who were peeking behind the great hall doors, indicating that the switch was a success.
Once she reached the doors, Fred picked her up and spun her, "AHHH THAT WAS AMAZING!!!-" "HOW'D YOU GET HIM TO TALK FOR SO LONG?" George asked, in the same excitement as Fred. Elia laughed with the lot then said, "blimey, the bastard went on about how he won the match all by himself as if it was a fair match". George rolled his eyes, "jeez what a prick"
"Well that prick won't be playing quidditch for at least a month," Elia added, causing the two of them to return to laughing.
Elia couldn't even begin to describe what she was feeling. All she could feel was this huge rush of pure adrenaline and happiness overcome her as a whole. Nothing has ever felt so wrong yet so incredibly right for her. This lively and vibrant part of Elia was finally surfacing and it felt absolutely amazing. Elia felt herself falling in love with this version of her, never even knowing there was a version of herself that she could fall in love with. It was obscure, but it felt right.
"you're amazing you know that," Fred said, stopping her in her tracks. Elia's breathing paused and her stomach tickled with butterflies as she looked up at him. His eyes glistened at her in pure amazement, as if he was watching hundreds of fireworks burst in the most vibrant of colors, the feeling being equivalent to a forehead kiss.
Elia snapped out of her tiny trance and let out a flustered giggle, "Thanks, you're half as".
Fred's jaw dropped in offense with his lips slightly curled, trying not to smile, "half as amazing?". Elia nodded teasingly making Fred playfully ruffle the top of her head with his hand when all of a sudden, a loud guffaw set off in the great hall causing the three to peek behind the door. It was a furious Professor Snape yelling at Draco, who was transfigured as the moody, dark, professor. The three kids laughed ferociously as they watched Draco try to foolishly explain himself as Professor Snape yelled at him with his deep nasal voice, both trying to yell over the other. Elia couldn't contain her laughter and placed a hand over her aching stomach and one over her mouth.
"DRACO MALFOY YOU JUST EARNED YOURSELF A 5 MONTH'S DETENTION AND SUSPENSION FROM QUIDDITCH" Professor Snape yelled, encouraging Elia's laughter. Elia looked behind her and locked eyes with a proud Fred. She smiled and ruffled the top of his head, messing up his hair and the two laughed. "Well done Quill," Fred said as Elia beamed proudly.
She liked her new friend. She liked him a lot.
