the one where Josie is sporty and Penelope is only nice to her <3

***

Josie spots Penelope in the stands halfway through the game, leaning against the fence and reading some complicated book instead of paying any attention to the field. Her heart soars for just a moment until her focus is drawn back to the game when the whistle is blown, and the muscle memory of the game kicks in and Penelope slips form her mind.

Soccer has always been Josie's favorite sport. She used to play with Lizzie when they were young, but with time her sister got bored of the sport and she decided she'd rather be team manager. It suited her much better anyway.

So Josie adores soccer, and she adores scoring goals and beating someone to the ball by just one step. It's even more exhilarating when Penelope Park is in the stands, even when the whole school knows she dislikes extracurriculars and sports more than the werewolves she puts up with every day.

When the final whistle blows, Josie knows she's a sweaty mess. Lizzie gives the rest of the team a little lecture, but she lingers and collects her things as the crowd clears and heads back to the building.

Penelope has moved to the front of the stands by the time she's changed out of her cleats and tugged sweatpants on over her shorts. It's a hot day, but she's much more comfortable as she crosses the field to Penelope.

Penelope's gaze shoots up when she hears Josie dragging her feet in the grass, and she drops her book into her lap with a smile.

"Great game, babe." she smirks and Josie rolls her eyes as she stops in front of her.

"You were barely even watching, I saw you reading."

Penelope smiles, "No, I saw your first, um, whatever it's called." she waves her hand toward the net and Josie, of course, finds it endearing.

"Well I scored three, so you missed two."

"Whatever, you know I physically can't pay attention to sports." Penelope says with an eye roll, reaching out to tug at Josie's jersey so she's standing in between her legs, "But you I have no trouble paying attention to."

Josie blushes, and her hand falls to Penelope's shoulder to keep herself up. "How do you look so good in this ugly yellow...?" Penelope mumbles and leans up to steal a sweet kiss from Josie's lips.

"Why can't you be this nice all the time, huh?" Josie's hand moves from Penelope's shoulder to hold her cheek.

"I could only ever be nice to you...and I have a reputation to uphold, don't I?"

Josie laughs, ducks down to kiss Penelope again. "So, what are we doing tonight then?"

"I say we ditch whatever party your sister throws and get a pizza, but that's just me." Penelope shrugs, and Josie shivers when her hand slips just under her jersey.

Before Josie can say yes, that's exactly what she wants to do, Penelope pulls at the hem of her jersey more firmly.

"What if I just wore this one day, hm? Just for a fun surprise?"

"You'd have to get it off me first..."

Penelope shakes her head and reaches for Josie again, but she slips out of her hands. "I don't recall ever having a problem with that!"

"I'll meet you in your room later." Josie smiles at the adorable look on Penelope's face, the classic novel in her lap, her untied converse, and her curls that have gone crazy in the wind. She gives her one more kiss before she goes, Penelope smiles into it like she always does, and she sighs as she watches Josie walk off to the locker room.

-

The very next morning, Penelope stumbles out of bed with an extreme need for coffee. She tugs on the nearest shirt and sweatpants, slips on her slippers and creeps down to the kitchen to grab herself and Josie a coffee.

"Morning." she mumbles as she passes her little coven in the hallway, and in her sleepy haze she misses the way they all do a double take at the name on the back of her shirt.

She makes her way down to the kitchen, wiping at her eyes as she descends the back stairwell to the coffee machine.

Her morning routine is simple, she always wakes up before Josie and goes to get coffee before Josie wakes up, and it's always a shock that Lizzie doesn't notice Josie is gone, but it works for the secrecy of it all.

MG starts laughing when he walks in behind her, and she turns to face him with a frown. It's much too early to deal with MG's jokes.

"Nice shirt, Peez." he says and slaps her back.

"What—oh..." Penelope looks down, blushes and covers her face. "How many people do you think saw this?" she pulls at the Salvatore crest in the center and MG shrugs, "All I know is that Jed owes me a twenty over this."

"Over what?"

MG gives her a knowing look, "Over you being a goner for Josie."

"Whatever," Penelope mumbles and pours cream into her coffee, "we can talk about this when I'm actually awake."

"Oh we definitely can!" MG calls after her as she balances the mugs in each of her hands on her way back up the stairs. She tries to get back to her room faster, but every time she tries to speed up she spills the coffee all over herself.

When she finally gets back to her room with burning hands, she mumbles an incantation that opens the door, and finds Josie still sound asleep in her bed, all curled up under the blankets ad reaching across the bed to the part where Penelope was just sleeping.

She places the coffees down on the bedside table and crawls back into bed, tugging the fluffy covers ver herself, and so what if she stares at Josie for a minute or two, or three, or....well she doesn't know how long, but Josie wakes up eventually.

Josie does the cat-like stretch she does every morning before she opens her eyes, letting a little whine slip from her lips, but it's cut short when Penelope reaches out and tickles the exposed skin on her stomach.

"Were you just watching me?"

Penelope hums, taking in Josie's drowsy look that never gets old. Josie hums as she rolls on her side to face her, and a little smile grows on her face when she sees Penelope's shirt. Or her shirt, actually.

"What's with this?" Josie reaches out and traces the collar of her jersey, her fingers eventually climbing Penelope's neck and brushing through her hair. Penelope blushes, which is unusual, and Josie laughs. "What?"

"I...accidentally wore this downstairs." Penelope reveals, "MG saw me, and he'll totally blab, so our cover is blown."

Josie jostles around in what Penelope assumes is a shrug, but she ends up closer all the same. "I don't really mind, do you?"

Penelope shakes her head, "No, but I thought you might. What about Lizzie?"

Josie drops her hand back down to the side of Penelope's neck, and leans in to drop a kiss to her cheek. "I told her a few weeks ago," she squeaks out, "I wanted to tell her about you...she's been good about it, actually. She said she had her suspicions the whole time."

Penelope  leaves Josie nervous for a second, but eventually she smiles, "Yeah, I told Hope like two months ago, so..."

Josie laughs,  "Oh good, I knew she was being weird." she mumbles and Penelope snorts, "She's always weird."

"Can't believe you wore that in front of everyone." Josie laughs as she leans in. "Shut up," Penelope mumbles, only able to hide her smile for a second to kiss Josie, pulling back to hide it and then kissing her again more soundly.

Penelope spends the rest of the morning in Josie's jersey, and Josie takes enough pictures of her in it to last a lifetime.
