i hate them so much. or, at least, i think i do. but if i hate them, then why do i feel drawn to them?
my thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a door opening. i turned to see Damien walking through the door alone and closing it behind him. i was glad it was just him and no one else.
"hey, Shayne," he sighed as he sat down next to me.
"hey."
there was a brief pause before Damien spoke again.
"all the interns seem to be getting along pretty well, don't you think?"
i knew what he was trying to do. he was trying to get me to talk about why i hated (y/n) so much.
"yeah, especially (y/n) and that writer. they seem pretty close. anyway, do you want to go get some lunch?" i tried changing the subject.
"sure! we could have lunch with the squad and bring (y/n) along!" that was not the answer i wanted to hear.
"well, i was kind of hoping it would just be you and me."
"Shayne, we both know the only reason you say that is because you don't want (y/n) to be there. why don't you like them, dude? they're funny, and they fit in perfectly!"
"no, they don't, Damien!" i stood up, yelling, "our group–our family–was perfectly fine before they came along! am i seriously the only one who feels like they're intruding?"
"yes, you are." Damien's tone was serious. "the squad is going out for lunch, and i'm inviting (y/n), so if you don't want to see them, then just don't come," he spat as he got up and left the room.
i was once again on my own.
even my best friend doesn't get it.
this sucks.

"hey, (y/n)!" i turned to see Damien walking towards me.
i looked at Jack, using my eyes to ask him if it was alright if i cut our conversation short.
"go ahead," Jack said with a smile.
i smiled back and went to greet Damien halfway.
"what's up?"
"well, the squad was going to go get some lunch, and i was wondering if you wanted to come since, you know, you're one of us now," he laughed.
"oh, really? i would love to go–"
my face changed as i remembered one person that this outing included.
"umm, will Shayne be there?" i asked, trying not to sound worried or anxious.
"i'm not sure," Damien said, looking quite disappointed. "but, even if he is, we won't let him be rude to you. i'm really sorry about him, by the way. i don't know what's up with him. he's usually one of the nicest people on the planet."
so, it's just me, then?
"so, do you still want to go?" Damien asked hopefully.
"yeah, sure. why not?"
i said bye to Jack and told him where i was going. he told me goodbye and hugged me again.
he's a good hugger.
